Cost aside, what oil would you use?

I already do.

I use Motorcraft in the Ford 5.4 because of availability and warranty required 5,000 mi OCI. I have not seen anything better for that OCI in that engine.

I use Castrol Syntec OW-30 in the GM 2.2 OHV because it sees 70 mi round trip commute every day with 10,000 mi OCI. Again I have not seen anything better for this use.

I used Redline 10w30 in the Corvette LS1 because it spent lots of time at the Drags, Auto-X and Track Days at Road Atlanta. Can I proove this was better than any other Synthetic? No, but it gave me peace of mind.

You can imagine my joy when a few months later I stumbled onto Quaker state 4.4 litre jugs for $8 CDN or so, PLUS you got a free Oil Filter (Quaker State) and they even included 5w20 in the offer.

I will not even start on the number of hand and power tools I have bought just because the Canadian Tire Flyer made it impossible not to...

It's even worse when you buy oil and tools on the same trip

Two jugs of Pennzoil Platinum and a 138 piece socket and wrench set on my last trip (socket/wrench set was $100 off - couldn't let that deal pass)

I would bet in real life all the top syn oils are about the same, Like the top petroleum oils are about the same, look at the used oil analysis. Sorry guys that I am not brand loyal .If it works it works.

It would be fun to use some of the boutique oils. I've had good results with M1, although I've recently been using PP. It would be fun to try Motul and Elf, one of the realy costly Redlines, and so on. None of these oils would hurt any engine, and variety, as they used to say, is the spice of life.

Looks like AMSOIL is the leader here. I have a question that has been on my mind a long time. With all the degradation to MOBIL 1, I have to wonder if the EP has been a group lll sense day one and if so, what did they do to it to highly advertize 15,000 mile changes? I keep thinking IF this is possible, then all the type 3 syn's will do the same. Go easy on me. Things just don't make sense to me.

Well that depends... There are certainly Synthetics available I would be a bit leary of at Porsche's 20,000 mi OCI.
