Corrupted mrt.exe file?

It would appear that something has attacked/corrupted the mrt.exe (Malicious Software Removal Tool) file on my laptop.

Laptop started acting funky, and when I run a scan with apps like Spybot or SuperAntiSpyware in safe mode, they get hung up on the system32/mrt.exe file.

Should I simply go in and delete the Malicious Software Removal Tool?

I haven't run Malware Bytes yet...
 
I would get rid of that file ASAP, then run a good Anti-virus tool...

I NEVER D/L the MSRT, EVER! I don't trust it and who knows how it might mess with my running A/V apps... It's scary enough just installing MS's security updates...

I still haven't completely recovered a laptop drive that one of MS's security updates trashed last summer. It was quicker to install a new drive and rebuild my system from scratch..
 
Well, it appears that this was the first sign that the hard drive is failing in my laptop. Laptop has been in use 21 months.

And of course, neither Newegg or Tiger Direct had the drive in stock.

However, did find one from a vendor in Houston, should be here middle of next week. Paid $50 delivered for a new 160GB Samsung drive. Exactly the same one that is in it now.

Was able to get a set of recovery DVD's burned this morning (nothing like waiting until the last minute...), and am burning a final set of back-up DVD's right now.

I didn't see the need for a 250. I'm only looking to get another year out of this laptop anyway.

Ahhh. See, the 250GB is actually 20 dollars CHEAPER in my price list than the 160GB model......

I don't know what I would have done with all that extra storage.... Plus, I've had BAD experiences with Trashiba products in the past.

I was very pleased to get the 160GB OEM drive for $41.99.

I hope that Directron turns out to be a good vendor.
 
I've had bad experiences with pretty much every HDD vendor except WD and Seagate. Not that their records have been flawless, just better than my experiences with all the others, LOL!
 
Back up and running on with the new drive. Computer is faster now, likely due to the fresh install of software. I've noticed that the touch pad works better as well.... not sure where that improvement came from.

Was pleased with the vendor for the hard drive, no surprises....everything went as it should.

My backup from Mozy was a bonus as well.
 
I'm now getting the same messages from Windows, that my hard drive is possibly ready to fail.... just like before.

I just installed a new, OEM drive just 4 weeks ago...

??

In your earlier post, you said that you made a recovery set. Was that the OS recovery? Some manufacturers are cheap and will not send a set of factory pressed dvd's with the OS and one with the apps/drivers.

If you made the recovery when the HDD was going or it had malware on it, it could have copied that stuff right to the recovery dvd set.

I would contact the manf. to see if they have a factory set of recovery dvd's, or try to find a licensed copy of the OS and see if that will work.

This make sense?
