Correction...Lead not Iron...Forgive me

At 50K miles on my 03 6.0 liter PSD, I got 7 on lead...the techs said that we should watch it for the next sample in 5K. They also said this could be due to heavy towing but I only tow a 4500 pound boat...I have been towing it a lot lately. They said it could be due to a bearing. This was my first sample with Shaeffer's 9000 5W/40. Never had high lead before. Previous OA's showed Iron at 2-3.

Do any of you oil experts have any suggestions? Could it be the additives in the Shaeffers?

First of all, 7 isn't bad on lead so don't get alarmed. A few questions....have you been running regular conventional oil up until the switch to Schaeffer's? If so, the Schaeffer's is more than likely cleaning up a little lead oxidation on the bearings and actually showing a false lead reading.

What is your fuel percentage in your oil according to your analysis? Do you use any fuel treatment with your diesel fuel?
 
I have been using Mobil 1 for the last 20K miles so not my first time for synthetic. This is my first time to use Shaeffer's. I have used Stanadyne since I bought the truck. I recently started using Shaeffer's Soyshield. My fuel % this time was 1%. Last sample (samples taken and oil changed at 5K) it was 0.5%. This sample was winter sample with a lot of short trips.

Does this help with your analysis? I'm thinking if anything it could be some turbo wear.

The reason I ask you about fuel dilution and fuel adds is because with fuel adds in the fuel and leaky injectors the fuel adds are being dumped into the crankcase oil, albeit at small amounts.

Fuel adds are very concentrated strong cleaners and over time as they are leaked into the oil with the fuel they clean things. This is just a guess....but it's a possibility that the fuel adds leaking into your crankcase with the fuel may very well be cleaning a little lead oxidation off the turbo bearings. Make sure to not overdose on fuel adds each tankful.

I would keep an eye on the lead to ensure that it doesn't skyrocket. I had a similar thing happen to me recently while running Soy Shield in my tank. Here is my last UOA: Schaeffer's UOA

I've been running the Schaeffer's Diesel Treat 2000 for the past 12k miles and that's usually what I've always run, except for the one time I got a gallon of Soy Shield. My elevated lead (12 ppm) came while running Soy Shield with 1.0% fuel dilution, although I'm not saying the Soy Shield was the culprit. It was probably cleaning my engine.
 
Small turbo's such as those found on the PSD don't often have lead bearings. They usually (typical of Airesarch turbo's that IH uses) have brass collars for bearings. I'm not 100% sure as I've never had a VGT off a 6.0 a part yet.

I wouldn't worry about the slight spike in lead, 7 ppm isn’t bad; watch what it does next sample. The Stanadyne, Soysheild and fuel dilution probably has more to due with the Pb spike than anything else.
