My son just purchased a 05 chevy cobalt with the 2.2 ecotec engine. The car didn't come with a owners manual and I was wondering what coolant this engine took. It has orange coolant in the tank and with 150k and no service records were going to start with oils and coolant.
Thanks in advance,
Randy

+3 on dexcool.

Read up on procedure, if you drain the rad you'll get about 1/3 of its capacity out. Should unclamp a heater hose or open a block drain, or change a little bit out every year or two.

It accepts Dex-cool, but many "Multi Vehicle" coolants like Prestone have 2-EH corrosion inhibitors which are the same inhibitors found in Dex-cool. The color of the coolant in the bottle may not be orange, but once it is mixed with the coolant already in the engine, it turns orange. Just read the back of the bottle, and if you see 2-Ethyl-Hexanoate, you have a perfect copy of Dex-cool.

I recommend this method because "Multi Vehicle" coolants typically cost less than Dex-cool, and go on sale more regularly.
