Do a cross-reference to the Purolator L14477.

It's just like the Toyota filter except longer.

My wife bought a Camry 4-cylinder a few years ago and I've been running different filters to see what works.

Here are some which seem to give good used oil analysis that are in the standard size:

Purolator PL 14476 PureOne

Mobil 1 M1-103

Toyota 90915-1003 (Japanese made Denso)

Delco Ultraguard Gold UPF1233, GM# 25329391(discontinued)

There may be others, but these are the ones I've actually experimented with.

Two of them are hard to find. The Delco is no longer made, and the Toyota is a grey market import not sold at the dealers.

Your FL400 cross references to a SDF34 Amsoil/LF134 Hastings.
Those filter sizes have 8 PSI by valves.
The correct filter SDF10(Amsoil)LF410 or longer LF413(Hastings)PH4967(Fram),PF1219-PF1220(AC) have 14 PSI by by valves.

Something to keep in mind is that at least some (if not many) of the small Japanese OEM filters actually have a surprisingly large media area. And that's what's important -- total media area. Some filters with medium or large shells actually have a modest amount of media -- the Bosch #3312 filter for Hondas is one example, with an unimpressive 81 sq in. (The competing PureOne #14459 for Hondas has 116 sq in, with the longer #24458 close to 200.) There's at least one Subaru OEM filter which is said to be tiny, yet has a large media area.

I do know that if one doesn't know the area for a given filter, but they're concerned about same, Purolator PureOne and Wix/Napa Gold filters, in general, have more media than most. This claim comes from the numerous filter studies I've read, plus a bunch of e-mail inquiries to the various manufacturers. There's certainly other good brands as well, but if you go with PureOne or W/NG, it's unlikely you'll need to give much thought to media area or filter capacity.

Any knowledge of Amsoil's media amount?
I ordered a couple of Amsoil filters blind and they're the same size as the Fram 4967 which is tiny.
The OEM Filter that's on the '05 Corolla now is bigger.

I'm of the opinion that the bypass valves are there to protect the media. Assuming that you're comparing WIX/NG to WIX/NG in a bigger can, you can reasonably assume that the bigger can will have higher holding capacity.

Although we can reasonably assume that the bypass valve is there to protect the media, we don't necessarily know why a manufacturer would spec a given filter for a given engine ..nor why if you get a WIX it may have 8-12 bypass valve setting ..while a Baldwin may have a 12-17. One could reason ..that since even x-ref filters have different bypass settings between them ..that they have less to do with the engine that they're used in ..and more to do with the filter itself. Assuming that the bypass valve setting wasn't something radical like some VW/AUDI with 30 psid ratings ..I would not give it too much thought.

I'd go as big as you can in the finest filtration level available.

Amsoil's SDF57 will fit the Corolla engine. It has the same threads, but a little larger gasket diameter.

I called Amsoil and the rep said there isn't a larger filter he could recommend.
When I called for my Grand Prix earlier,a rep said I could use a SDF23 which is longer than the SDF29 that is the correct oil filter number.
So if there was one bigger for the Corolla,he would have told me.
I read here somewhere that the SDF34 was longer and would work.
However when I mentioned that number to the Amsoil rep he said the by PSI # is different and wouldn't recommend using a sdf34.
The rep assured me that filter will do it's job well for the 7000-7500 miles I want it to.
So I'll use the tiny sdf10.

Do you see what I'm getting at here??
 
Thanks for your research and comments Gary.

I was considering the WIX 51396 for my Corolla but am surprised by the difference in by-pass pressure with the Purolator and other filters.
8-11 psi vs 14-18 for the Puro, 14 for the Baldwin and 11-17 for the Donaldson.

For the same application, would the WIX run in by-pass mode all the time to protect itself with a much lower setting than comparable filters from other brands?

What if the Toyota OEM filter, made by Purolator, also had the Purolator's 14-18 psi by-pass?
If I run a WIX with 8-11 psi by-pass?

Or do you mean that by-pass numbers are almost irrelevant?

Yes, essentially. They are where they are at for the protection of the media ..or so I reason. It's like a question of horses having one type of tooth ..and cows another ..yet both survive on the same grass

That is, each of these filter manufacturers offer these filters as an OEM spec filters ..yet offer different bypass settings. They all are supposed to provide OEM spec service. So each of the respective manufacturer's media may indeed filter with the OEM spec reliability and performance ...but WIX may use a media that is less durable and can only withstand 15 lb of PSID before incidents of media breach occur. Purolator may have the identical holding capacity and Beta rating ..but uses a more substantial media that allows them to have a failure rate @ 23 PSID ..hence they set their bypass valve for a 14-18 PSID .....and so on....

To the end user ..and aside from a "good, better, or best" type comparison ..they are identical as far as these manufactures are concerned and would have no bearing, in their opinion, on the functional operation of your vehicle.

There may be exceptions to this, as I said, in something like a VW/AUDI extended drain OEM spec'd filter that has a 30 PSID rating. It obviously has a more substantial media ..but if adapted to another engine ..that perhaps didn't have the proper relief settings in the oil pump ..it could actually (for one of the actual rare occurances where a filter could actually alter "flow") ..reduce flow. This would be a very rare thing to have happen ..and would not be a concern in the limited variances that you see in the "common" bypass valve settings between one manufacturer and another.

I ran those numbers with Amsoil and the 51396 and L14477 come up with the same tiny sdf10.
The B37 came up wuth some other part.One for a Briggs and Stratton.
Maybe I'll go with a Mobil 1 or the B37.
Any chance you know the number on a Mobil 1.
Is it a 103?

COlt, Your in the same boat that I am in with my Camry as we both need the same filter! We are both SOL and are relagated to small filters!

Sadly, been there and had to fight for warrenty work from 2 diff car companies and they have me in the mindset that anything I do will be listed for the car. Then I have something to go back to.

After the car warrenty is over, you just have to worry about any warrenty with the filter company.

Bill,as long as the filter has the specs of a Toyota and Toyota doesn't provide free filters,one can use any brand of filter and not worry about voiding one's warranty.

What BillinUtah is saying is that if the OEM spec filter for your model (even if the same engine in another application gets the bigger filter) isn't on there ..and you run into troubles ..then you've provided one avenue of "escape" for the dealer. It's the same thing in an argument with a spouse. You don't have to be "wrong" or at fault ..just provide something to beeach about ..and you've lost and have to then fight to get it straightened out. You're put on the defensive.

Personally I wouldn't worry about it. Just kinda keep it in mind in the back of your head that if anything goes whacky with your engine ..spin off the long one ..and replace it with the correct one.

Here's the way it would play out. Your engines seizes. It's towed in. The tech sees a bigger filter on there (which he should know ..since he works on them all the time). He calls over the service manager and shows him that the oil is full ..but the filter is not the correct part #. The service manager then quotes countless mythical incidents of engine failures due to improper filter selection by the owner ..and attempts to deny the warranty claim. The onus would then, by default, be upon you to prove that the filter could have nothing to do with the failure. Not that this would be too hard ..but now you're the one doing the proving.

That said, the likelyhood of an engine/lubrication related problem is very slim. I would use the larger filter and not worry.
