I am looking at a 97 f2504x4, and the owner has two year old cooper discoverer at3s on it with fine looking tread wear. I am curious though because he runs sand bags in the bed even in summer because he says the rear end handles loose when it gets wet out. It's got a 351 and was used to plow early in it's life. Now sitting just over 160k, is this a tire issue or a worn out suspension thing, or just a big truck thing? Compared to a car or compact truck it kind if feels floaty when cornering or Changing lanes.

Lots of power and not a lot of weight on the back, that's what ALL wheel drive (not part time four wheel drive) is supposed to help.
I've got the AT3s on my Dodge 2500 quad cab 4X4 with 8ft bed. Best tire I've had in the rain. All trucks are lighter in the rear. Heavier trucks have stiffer rear suspension on top of that too. Great tire for everything but mud.
It has a curb weight of 5730 and 59/41 weight distribution I believe, still seems like it wouldn't have a problem getting traction with that much weight. How long have you ran the tires? I think they had a 55k tread life? It might Judy be due for new springs and shocks to get the handling back to spec.

You might check the tire pressures he's running. I wouldn't be surprised if he's running the max, 80 psi, with an empty bed. The pressure needs to match the load on the tires.

too much rear psi, and just a heavy duty rear-end with no weight.
My cummins is the same way, have had nearly every a/t tire on the market, still the same...but is much worse when tire inflation is too high with no weight in the rear.
