Anytime I "flushed" a transmission it was after the pan was dropped, filter/screen replaced and the pan cleaned. I always feared stirring up the [censored] that was laying on the bottom of the pan and circulating that through the system. A transmission shop buddy of mine agrees. Now if flushes were done on a routine basis then the pan drop, filter/screen replacement might be overkill.
As far as the OP is concerned, those transmissions had many problems, and it might just have been time for it to die.
