I have recently started my own electrical business and am focusing on generators. I am currently working on one and have noticed that even the new ones do not have coolant recovery tanks. While they may not be required I feel as though the applications I am working on need a recovery tank to keep the air out of the system. The one I am working on now had the radiator rot due to being to close to the hog buildings it serves. The h2s from the manure has corroded a lot of the copper on the unit and these generators continue to use copper core radiators.
I am planning on just using a coolant jug as a reservoir as the hose is long enough to reach the ground. I could buy an actual reservoir but I think a coolant jug will work just as well.
As a side note this generator has an 8.1l gm engine and has been sitting unrun for two years with a leaky radiator. There was some orangish sludge in the external coolant heater lines and rotten copper flecks in the coolant passages. It only has 105 hours on it and was new in 2007. I drained the weak looking greenish stuff that was in it and replaces the radiator and hoses. When I got around to trying to run the thigh I filled it with water and a couple of bottles of prestone flush and only ran that about 4 minutes due to other issues preventing the unit from staying running. I think I am just going to fill the radiator with 50/50 and call it good.
