Coolant overflow tank question

I bought some Motul Mocool coolant additive and would like to get it in the coolant system by sucking out the coolant in the overflow tank, then putting in the additive. My question is whether the additive will drain out of the overflow tank and mix with the coolant elsewhere within a few thousand miles. It is a pain to drain out some coolant the normal way in this engine (BMW 135i) so I'm trying to avoid that.
 
Well if you look at the tank with engine cold and then hot, you will get an idea of how much shifts back and forth between the radiator and overflow tank during each cold-hot-cold cycle.

So it not miles its number of cold-hot-cold cycles. But yes it will mix.

But why do you need an additive? Most high quality antifreeze has all the additives it needs. I would not try and extend the life of the antifreeze past what its rated for by using an additive.
 
It will take quite some time to get the additive into the cooling system by going through the overflow tank. The best way to do it would be a coolant exchange with the additive incorporated into the replacement coolant.

This additive will not reduce the temperature of your engine - that's not what it's intended to do. If anything it should *increase* the coolant temperature. The coolant temperature will be kept relatively constant by the thermostat, so you will probably see no difference at all.

What it can do is reduce the metal temperature of the hottest parts of the motor internals that are in contact with the coolant by reducing the boiling effect. (probably in the head) Since water cools better than steam, at a point on the metal surface where bubbles form, the additive could reduce the point temperature. But at normal coolant pressure and flow rates, you would have to be driving pretty hard to reach that point anyway. Under normal driving conditions, and even spirited driving, this stuff will probably make no difference at all.

Raising the boiling point of the coolant is the job of the pressure cap anyway. Are you really driving this car so hard for so long that it would require such fluid modification? Instead of messing around with the coolant chemistry and possibly voiding the warranty, maybe you can use a radiator cap with a higher opening pressure or a lower temperature thermostat.

It will take some time to approach equilibrium of the mix of the reservoir and the coolant system.
Since the additive is not crucial, it is OK to do it in this manner.

A quick and easy way is to turkey baster fluid out of the main system - use a hose extension if necessary.

This BMW 135i engine only has an oil temperature gauge (not coolant temp.) but it is a very hot running engine. During normal driving oil temps are around 230F-240F. During aggressive street driving I've gotten the oil temp up to 245F. It has a factory oil cooler.

I do like the idea of a higher pressure oil cap.

You mean radiator cap I am sure. I would replace the radiator cap if I did not think it was working right, same for the thermostat, but I would not change either to something other than the factory spec.
 
Water wetter or Purple Ice are similar products.
They help pure water best.
With common anti freeze mixes, they don't help a lot.
I can see validity in their use, but it will be very minor.
Local hot spots on the cyl head may be cooled better, if there are any tiny spots where boiling occurs.
You won't see your temp gauge reading cooler, if that is what you are expecting. That would be really rare.
