coolant flush questions

I have a 04 impala 3800 that needs the coolant flushed and I have a couple questions.

1. Should I use one of those T-flush kits you install on the heater inlet hose to flush it out?

2. Should I use a flushing cleaner made by prestone or peak, or just flush with water?

I have been searching all weekend and read a lot of different information. Some say to flush, some say to put a T-flush in, some say the T-flush kits are bad, some say to just drain and fill, some say use flushing cleaner. Just trying to figure out how to do the best job of flushing without causing any problems.

As of now I think my most thorough flush job would be to drain the coolant, install a T-flush kit in the heater hose, flush system with water, Put in flushing cleaner stuff and run till hot, drain, flush threw the T-flush kit again with water, drain, add 6 quarts of pure dexcool(11.7 quarts total coolant capacity) and then fill with distilled water until at the right level.

Anyone see any problems with this procedure? Or have any other advice on how to do a good coolant flush?

Last decade or more all that I have ever done or done in shops I ran is drain and refill.After the first one at 6 years etc.I think the interval drops to every 3 years.If you wanted to cycle trough some water no harm but I just drain and refill on late model vehicles.
 
Two garden hose methods I use to speed up the process are:

1. Flush/backflush with the thermostat OUT.
2. Use the "T" kit.

If you don't like to leave some tap water in the system, just drain and refil, as hounddog does.
 
I just dain and refill the radiator regularly. I flush the radiator to get it all out.
 
What makes you think it needs to be flushed? Most times a drain and re-fill is all you need. I would not put any flushing chemical in any cooling system unless its plugged.

Use compressed air to blow out the heater hoses if needed.
 
If you have minerals in your water AND tap water was used then use a flush chemical. Most of them are just acid to dissolve lime build up. Lime is a regional thing and you should watch advise on a worldwide board for context. Every once in a while Chris142 has a picture of a plugged rad that kept getting filled with nasty desert water... for example.

I would not want to mess with the pH of my system unless I had to, and would flush the stuff out over and over to be sure it was clear if I did.
 
There should be a sticky at the top of the page, as this question is asked often... and for very good reason. First off if your not having any problems now.. I sure wouldn't tempt that by installing T's into rubber hoses, in my opinion this is just asking for problems, sure they are probably just fine, but when you start messing with hoses that may be a little old already, and that was just for fun the main point is I doubt you need any flushing unless you have noticed problems, if so then by that time it prob needs some attention... but here is the way I do it for a simple, no harm done, easy, cheap coolant change.

Pick your coolant, this is no easy task in itself !1 with all the coolants you have to choose from now, and what your manufacture recommends, do some research on this... if in doubt you can always purchase the coolant from your dealership which I do this for my Honda... it's a bit pricey, but it last a long time, and I don't have to worry about having the correct coolant make/build... by the way it's the Honda blue, I'm thinking I get a few extra horses just from that probably like 15 hp or something (this extra hp part is just for fun LOL)

Go to walmart get some distilled water, you should have already done your homework to check your cooling system capacity, get enough to do an entire coolant change, and then 3 more gallons, it's very cheap around 50 cent a gallon.. Remember distilled water, not drinking, or any other kind, and don't use tap water, you are taking a gamble if so by introducing a lot of chemicals, getting your cooling system PH off balance etc etc, and I have done this myself ending up with a huge mess in a very short time.

I would then dump the rad drain (please catch the used coolant as it kills dogs graveyard dead in a slow, very inhumane way.. bleeding the guts out) cats or whatever else, and they love the sweet smell. Fill with distilled water, drive around for a day or so if no cold weather, then drain again, repeat drive around, do this until you get clear water from the drain, and you can be sure that you have cycled everything good by driving to get up to full operating temp, and at least 15 minutes after that ( but the 3 day drive is much easier of not hard pressed to do this as you can do a 5 minute drain/fill with distilled water the your normal driving routine for 3 days) Also remember you need to cycle your heat during this time, run it at max heat, max fan etc for as long as you an stand it, and at least 10 minutes at full operating temp to clean out your heating system, and getting fresh coolant in there as well.

After getting clear water draining out, sit down with a piece of paper, and calculate up your cooling system capacity/ and how much you will need to add to bring it up to what you desire. 50/50 or stronger ( I go stronger 70/30 but I doubt it does any good unless you live in sub zero or worse temps LOL.. however it may offer more corrosion protection for the cooling/heating system..) If all you can get is 50/50 then it's no big deal just add enough to equal what the manufacture says your cooling system capacity is, then I do another half gallon flush/fill over that at least ( just depends on how much drains out, and where I'm at in bringing the system up to par) that way I know I have very close to the 50/50 mix which is the best you can do getting premix. Now on the good stuff straight coolant it's even easier as you already have you cooling system filled with distilled water, just drain out enough water ( drain in a catch pan, pour in a gallon jug that you should have plenty of now after all the walmart distilled water empties). I like to write down on a piece of paper how coolant I will need to add to my system using this method, and then make a small check list as you will likely have to drain more than once ( three times seems to be the trick here)

Just doing a simple cooling refresh, this is very easy thing here.. drain the rad, if your purchased premix 50/50 fill back up, if the good stuff straight coolant I would measure it out, and premix it with distilled water to whatever your choice is here 50/50 or 70/30.. it's very simple to do this way in my opinion premixing your straight coolant with distilled water you just need a clean gallon jug.. use your distilled water jug, pour your distilled water in a kitchen container/pitcher etc.. I would do at least two drain/fills this method to get enough fresh coolant in the system unless you are already doing it yearly/ every other year..

I got long winded, but I plan to copy this, and save it as many people ask for tips etc, and this is the best method I have found, and it is very easy, fast, and no mess. The walmart distilled water is the key here, very cheap... now you just need to pick your coolant... Don't forget your heater (use it wide open heat, and temp) and also clean your overflow bottle out if you can, and clean under side of your rad cap, replace if needed.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I don't believe there is a problem with thecooling system but I did open the radiator cap the other day and it looked like some gunk around the cap and in the radiator, this was the reason I thought a flush would be best. I would have to read the owners manual again but I thought it said that a flush was needed after so many miles or five years which ever came first, and this car has never had one. A coolant flush sticky would be great, the only problem I see is that it seems there are so many different opinions on ways to do this!

So instead of cutting heater hoses I should just fill with distilled water and drive around and then drain, and do this a couple times to flush everything out?

And also I shouldn't use the coolant flush stuff to get rid of any deposites?

So far the only thing I feel for sure on is to use distilled water(even though some say it doesn't matter) and to collect the old coolant, which I plan to do because the city takes it for free anyway. Also that it uses 11.7 quarts of dexcool.

I wasn't to keen on cutting into hoses but it seems like everything I found online was using one of those heater flush kits.

Just trying to sort out which way will do the best job!
 
I will hit on a few things here. You have to research this to form an opinion as to what you need to do.. First distilled water, I assure you what you see is not much in the way of sludge compared to the mess you can have by using tap water, it's dirt cheap using distilled water from walmart, I'm guessing 10 bucks or around that will give you enough water very easy.. Using distilled water you don't have to worry about the water ph, chemicals, and even trash/solids in the water.. using tap water your taking a huge chance... and an expensive one if you contaminate your cooling system.

Again I wouldn't cut any hoses..

I have used the coolant flush before, however I didn't see any good from it, and I would not use it again, if you have some sludge, and not a stopped up rad ( you would know it if it were full of sludge etc) all you need is a coolant change.. flush is a nice fancy word the dealer can do that cost lots of money as well... and all you get in the end is a coolant change.
 
Thanks rclint, I opened the radiator again today to check on the "sludge" a little better and it's almost like a watered down tooth paste. Not hard and almost turns to liquid when I rubbed it between my hands, my guess is just broken down coolant or something. I called the dealer today to get a price for flush and it was 140 for.

The distilled vs. tap water is one of the things I found opinions varied on. Some say if you use the T-flush and tap water and then drain that the little bit of remaining tap water won't hurt anything. Some say it will. I think I agree with you that it's not worth the chance. So this means no T-flush kit for me.

So without using the T-flush kit I will drain the coolant, fill with distilled water, run till hot, let cool, drain, fill again with distilled water, run till hot, wait to cool, drain, add 6 quarts of dexcool, then fill with distilled untill full, bleed the system.

Seems like the simpliest but best option right now. I will drive for a month or so and see how the new coolant looks at that time. It's crazy that I have been reading for days on the "best" ways to do a flush and have come to basically just draining and filling!

It depends on local tap water, I had T-flush on my '94 LS400 with over 250k miles and no coolant problem. It had water pump replaced once, upper radiator once, thermostat twice, heater inlet hose once, other heater/small coolant hose once. It has original radiator and lower hose. Since flushing with T-flush so easy and fast I change the coolant every 3 years or so, with either Preston or Peak all makes/all models whichever that was on sale.

Thermostat had been changed twice at the same time I did the timing belt at 100k and 200k miles. Water pump was changed at the first timing belt chnaged but I did not change at the second timing belt job.

In summary, the coolant system in this car is very reliable with T-flush installed and coolant flushed regularly.
 
Dexcool (and G-05) are tolerant of tap water if its not very hard. of course it is always better to have distiled water but tap water does not necessarily cause issues. Flushing all of the old coolant out is an advantage. The Impala model can gum with Dexcool. I'd consider switching to G-05 and changing the radiator cap to a Stant 10230/11230 spring-center cap. The thermostat is easy to remove on the 3.8 and it might be a good idea to replace it anyway.
 
I would still never introduce any tap water or anything other than distilled water into my cooling system just for the simple fact of never really being able to get it all out no matter what you do.. I will say if you flushed several times with distilled water, by several meaning 4 times or more after flushing to clear water using distilled.. but I don't see any need for any of this, you will get the benefits just by doing a simple coolant change. Also the distilled water is very cheap, and the sludge as its called is not a problem as long as your system is not clogged up with it... you caught this in time to bypass any major radiator/cooling system work.

Also don't forget your heater you must run your heater on max temp, max fan you want fresh coolant in there as well. You will have to decide on what coolant to use, that's why I posted above about picking a coolant is a huge deal in itself.. I myself would not use dexcool as I have seen what it can do to cars in my mothers car. BUT many people seem to be having great luck with it, but if your using dexcool, and already seeing some sludge I would do the complete coolant change as I posted above, and use another coolant zero doubts.

In my 97 Accord it had the exact same sludge you are talking about around the cap, I'm sure many of cars today on the road have this, at this point it's no real issue at all, but getting fresh coolant in your car will bring the cooling system back up to par= ph at the correct level, and corrosive protection revived. A coolant change is just like an oil change only your concentrating on corrosion protection, and ph balance which distilled water, and fresh coolant is exactly what is used to keep this in correct balance !!

I will let everyone else comment now, I have gave the best explanation I can, and also touched on several points repeatedly.. Whatever you do just don't forget that heater, and don't worry yourself to death about it ( I am really stuck on the distilled water part because I have seen what tap water can, and will do) but as long as you follow the instructions I posted above, or if you say to heck with it, and purchase one of the any makes, and color etc 50/50, and drain, and refill that simple will keep your cooling system in great shape ( would drain, and refill 3 times if doing the 50/50 pre mix, drain, and fill that way you can get enough fresh coolant in your system, I would also do it the same way 3 times if your going to use straight coolant, and mix it yourself 70/30 or 50/50 you can still just drain, and fill if you want) and by doing this very simple thing your cooling system will stay in great shape because your drained off the old coolant, and added fresh coolant to bring your cooling system back to correct ph level, and have the fresh corrosion properties, and other things that fresh coolant offers.

Don't forget that heater !!
 
I think it's okay to flush with tap water as long as it is displaced (as much as one can) with distilled water at the end. Tap water allows a person to do a thorough flush without worrying about the cost of distilled. This includes running the engine (water pump) during flush and flushing the heater core.

Once you've done a flush with tap water, drain out as much as you can, then pour distilled water to displace the tap water. Drain that, then button everything up and add the specified amount of antifreeze per system capacity.

Top off with distilled water.

This should leave very little tap water in the mix.

Are you comfortable with pulling the lower radiator hose off your radiator and letting the coolant drain out that way? If so, drain, refill with tap water and a flush product, circulate according to directions, drain, fill, circulate, drain, add the specified amount of full strength antifreeze and top with distilled water. Good idea to renew the thermostat periodically.

If your area has high mineral tap water, do the penultimate fill with distilled water as well.

If your peek into the cooling system showed no gunk, then just a drain and refill with the chemically identical antifreeze & water would be fine.
 
First I would like to thank everyone for their advice. Even though it seems to differ from person to person and not really sure what is the "right" or "best" way to do it, think I know all the different ways and opinions but they vary so much I don't seem to know the best way.

So would cutting the heater hose and installing a flush kit do a better job than just draining and filling with distilled water and running for 20 minutes and then draining and doing this a couple times and then filling with new coolant?
 
The T-flush is definitely quicker and easier than multiple drain and refills. You would have to do 4 or 5 refill and drains to get the level of flushing that a T-flush will do in a few minutes. Coolat manufactures say you can use tap water with anti-freeze like Dexool and G-05.

I think since the thermostat is so easy to get out on this vehicle and may need replacement anyway, I'd take it out and temporary install the water housing and insert a garden hose into the radiator side and flush the engine while idling. Then you could pour distilled water through the top hose to displace the tap water out of the engine. The reason why I say to do it this way is I think the engine is slightly higher than radiator on the Impala.

I personally wouldn't worry too much about the tap water unless the water in your area as known bad reputation.
