Those last steam locomotives were some incredible machines. It was the maintenance requirements that finally sealed their fate. For power, they outclassed their diesel contemporaries by a wide margin. I'm glad that O. Winston Link was able to capture a bit of history as the steam era came to a close.
I can't remember if it was the 3985, or its stablemate the 844, that one day had the chance to prove that steam could still "show 'em how it's done". A Union Pacific multi-locomotive consist had one of its diesels fail, making it impossible for the train to make it over a grade. The big steam locomotive, which was on an exhibition tour nearby, was able to quickly arrive on scene and push that big freight right over the top. Mark one up for the old-fashioned way.
