So I was just posting in another forum in response to someone's concerns over oil loss. In a 4.4 qt capacity system, they are losing 1 quart over 6k miles. Granted, my experience w/ the same car is 0 loss over 10k+ miles (the Fit). But I made the mistake of saying 1 quart over that duration is probably not going to be treated as a crisis situation by the dealer. I've never heard as much. I agreed it's unusual, though, in a car that most folks don't seem to have any consumption issues with and perhaps worth investigating. But...imminent danger of throwing a rod???

Discuss...

Lol, here's the exact response to my reply I got:

"It is not a "great deal" until the oil pump starts to cavitate and starve and then your crank wipes your bearings or you window the block with a rod.. besides the car in question is a year or so old."

I do agree, since most Fit owners dont seem to lose much oil, that it might be worth checking out, especially since the car is under warrenty. But no point for crisis talk. And I mispoke. It wasn't 1 qt in 6k miles. It was 1 qt in 10k miles. I can't fault the guy who jumped onto my post. He has a/some DSM turbo cars. No telling what types of experience he's had.

My initial response was try changing oil brands and then maybe look into something like arx? I thought that was being generous.

1 qt in 10k miles is practically nil.

Besides, oil loss in and of itself doesn't endanger your engine's internals unless you let it run low for a while.

I'm still not entirely sure what the question is here, but I suspect there's nothing to worry about.

I too, am giving you "huh" on this one?

Throw a rod because oil pump starts to cavitate?! Am I missing something all these years of dealing with gasoline engines (incl. blueprinting)? or is it full moon tonite?

I agree that a quart in 10,000mi is very little.

Oil pump cavitating? Sure, if you go 25-30k OCI's and never check your oil, and then whip some really hard corners...

Yeah, I know. Just double-checking myself. It's just Fits are so boringly reliable, unless you're poor Critic (who's friend's Fit seems to be lemony fresh), that this was the most interesting discussion I'd seen in a while. The oil misinformation is pretty high and I don't make much of an effort to correct anyone's ideas... No offense to any other posters from that forum...

That guy did it to himself with DSM turbo'ed in his fit, gawd knows somethings gonna give along the way and one of the most typical things that he would experience would be accelerated oil consumption (either by means of improperly done PCV part, lots of uneven/elevated oil temperature inside the engine, combined with relatively higher volatility motor oil.

AGain, I would take his case as an exception not applicable to us ho-hum regular, unmodified fit owners. Afterall: been using MC5W20 all these time and never seen a drop in oil level (I typically do OCI every yr or when my minder drops to approx. 20%).

I don't think the OP has a turbo, just the doom and gloom guy. I started off with PYB, then went PP, then M1 EP, and now I just throw in odds and ends, and I don't even get consumption on that. Long gone are the glory days of having an "exciting" sludger 9-5.
