Certain cars are okay, and certian cars are junk. Look at pretty much any large GM or Ford car. They're owner favorites that are still kicking.

I'll say this about Chrysler, specifically Jeep. More specifically, my 13 year old Cherokee.
Unreliable rating or whatever, 150K and 13 years and aside from routine maintenence--which is not expensive--all I've ever had to replace has been the water pump and clutch hydraulic system.
Pretty reliable to me.

AWD is not fuel efficient, not the engine.

Seems like Honda isn't as steller as they once was.......but that is still worlds above GM Ford and Chrylser.....Sorry but they still have a ways to....if they make it at all....

There is a strong tilt toward owner satisfaction here. What those 3 brands have in common is a very high degree of precision. Fit and finish, beautiful instrumentation and high quality feel to all the knobs and levers. Somehow Detroit does not comprehend the perceptive impact of that. When it is absent, it conveys a substandard impression.
Volkswagen is the best example of the 3 since it's a lower end vehicle by comparison. Most American cars are as reliable if not more reliable than VW.
So why is VW viewed as superior? For the same reason people opt for digital cameras made of metal instead of plastic. It no longer feels like a piece of junk. It's solid.
Volkswagen has a disproportionate number of female buyers. Ever notice that? Women are drawn to the perceived quality of them even more than men are.
Every Toyota, Nissan and Honda are better cars than any VW from a reliability standpoint. VW out classes them though. A $30,000+ Passat should be a flat out failure. Here a ludicrous name, Front Wheel Drive(what?)and a history of expensive repairs combine into a formula for success. All because it is put together extremely well. If you understand that you understand the predicament.
If I ran GM I'd make Volkswagen the benchmark to shoot for. It's easier than trying to beat Japan and it is more in keeping with American taste. We value looks and edge a lot. Combine that with solid slamming doors and Rear Wheel Drive. We can't bring back the American Dream with a FWD Cadillac. It's time to rest the crack pipe.
