Consumer Reports : Overpriced vehicles are ...

The primary buyers of Hyundai/Kia strike me as exactly the type of people to pay 20% over MSRP for a Hyundai/Kia
Pretty much. Buddy of mine was looking at a new Palisade for his wife and the Hyundai dealer started dicking him around on trade-in values for his truck but they didn't adjust markup for the vehicle. They were ***** about the trade though and told him they'd have someone within a day to buy the Palisade with the terms they were asking. He went to a nearby local GM dealer and picked up a brand new Acadia under sticker price and they gave him the trade-in he wanted on his truck. I get that it's an Acadia vs. a Palisade but eh, the Hyundai dealer was a giant POS, even without a mark-up.

The bottom line is that's a correct statement. If you look at other car forum sites dealer horror stories span the spectrum of brands and their (horrible) tactics right now.

I don't really get the big deal with the Palisade/Telluride anyway. I mean, they're nice, but they're not "pay over MSRP" nice.

There's too much competition in that segment to overpay.

Hyundai and Kia are notorious in my area of New England for being scum bags. I refuse to buy any of their products new and or slightly used because I would have to deal with them. Kia and Hyundai have a serious issue IMHO with their dealerships. Unfortunate as they finally have decent product but I feel like I entered a greasy restaurant after interaction with them and need a shower after I leave.

Amen. Which is why he was wanting to buy from this dealer as they weren't marking up. They were just gigantic POS's, at least the Sales Manager anyway.

I would never pay a penny over MSRP, simply out of principal. Dealers are making record profits off people only looking at a monthly payment numbers. I understand supply and demand, but I'll let someone else get milked. When the economy tanks, hopefully the dealers that didn't price gouge remain.

KIA dealerships remind me of the old British Leyland dealerships of the '70s.

....I'd take an Acadia every time.
When my niece visited a few years ago she had a rental Traverse - the older gen I car based on the Enclave. Very underwhelming as a passenger and a floppy body. Surprised at that, since this thing is an 2-1/2 tonner (!) with 2 passengers and a tank of fuel. I wonder if the newer platform is better. It is lighter by a 1/4 ton. Not my kind of vehicle though. I prefer a SWB, STD Cab, body-on-frame truck with a 5 speed mt. Passengers? Kick up cap with a rear facing bench clamped into the bed. If you are nice enough, I'll even pick up the two-dozen Yuengling empties rolling around back there :)

I don't blame the dealers, they do it because people still pay up. I agree that said people are making a poor decision and they reap what they sow financially.

People have been saying that for years. One never knows till they get to be 5-8-10 years old and then look at the track records. The ones that people were saying were finally "decent" 5 years ago are now under scrutiny for engine issues.

My GF bought a new '21 Acadia last year due to a deer totaling out her Escape. It definitely wouldn't have been my first choice, but she didn't like any of my recommendations by Acura/Toyota/Lexus/Subaru. She likes boxier looking vehicles and tells me some of the other ones look like station wagons to her. LOL She also needed to find a vehicle ASAP. I would not let her even step foot into a Kia/Hyundai dealership. I'd be completely embarrassed to have to drive it....and this comes from a guy who drove a '05 Honda Civic as a daily driver from late '04 till summer of '21. To me it's the whole "polishing a turd" thing....regarding some of their higher end models, like Palisade and Telluride. They may look all fancy and nice, but they are still cheap vehicles and those who own them are willing to sacrifice quality for something that aesthetically appears to be high end luxury. A "poser" vehicle of sorts, if you will.

I view the Palisade/Telluride more as a diamond in the rough. Kind of like the GT-R for Nissan.

I guess that would work, but keep in mind I value diamonds -VERY- low and will never buy one of them either. LOL. There's nothing rare or special about them, other than the prices are kept artificially high by industry limiting supply. Many people have been and continue to be bamboozled by DeBeers/N.W. Ayer's greatest marketing scam of all time.

It's a figure of speech.................................................................

Herewith a few of the Kia dealer stories:
At a dealer that had a GTS the salesman asked what else I was looking at; I told him an M2 Competition. His response? "Uh, that's a Mercedes, right?"
On a couple of Stinger forums I read about multiple examples of cars being damaged while being serviced- one guy found that the alleged “tech” had written the oil capacity of the engine on the engine cover with a Sharpie.
My favorite: The Kia dealer locked the owner’s key fob in the car. Rather than call the owner the alleged “technicians” pried on the door to get access to the latch. Of course that idiotic move scratched and dented the door jamb- but the service advisor proudly noted that, “Ya can’t see anything when the door is closed!”
But not to worry; the hapless owner also was given a complimentary bottle of touch-up paint!
