Construction contractor on Zoom call was constantly spitting chewing tobacco into empty coffee cup

We have a team call on Mondays. I'm certainly multitasking when the AL, LA, MS and AR teams are going through their stuff. Probably doing my time card or other administrivia I need to get done. I don't really need to hear all the details of what Exadatas are going into Wal*Mart this week unless I'm going to AR to do some of the install work.

When we get to STL/Southern IL, I give my full attention. It's just a smart use of my time.
That makes sense on large calls. Or on projects where you're just listening in, or only involved in a small part of it. But unless if it absorbs my attention it can be too easy to be distracted.

I actually try to keep my camera on, mostly to keep me accountable. It was too easy to multi-task before, sending emails while in meetings, and otherwise not paying attention, now it's just all the easier since we're not face-to-face.
Today I have yet another 2 meetings at the same time, 1 to be on stand by just someone can ask one question, another is to watch and see if something crazy going on so I can ask 1 question. I have 2 separate ear buds 1 attach to each laptop on one ear each.

This is crazy, useless, and wasteful. We can probably cut down 50% of all meetings and still make operation works well.

And now we want to turn video on? Seriously, things get done faster without these wastefulness.

About 20% of our folks don’t turn on the camera ~ I’m one. Another 5-10% rub eyes or touch mouth during call … wait - we now Zoom so much because ?

I agree to a certain extend, except the standard of professionalism and respect are different depends on where and when. Doing that for others is one thing but expect from others is not right, IMO.

If I hire a technician to work in the lab and loop him / her in for a meeting then I do not expect him or her to speak like a CEO and dress like one, I will just get some answer and let him or her back to do his or her stuff. I am not hiring her to burden her for these little details. I do not expect him or her to enjoy meeting to begin with and want to torture him or her for that.

Construction people would probably not be the kind who enjoy sitting in on meeting dressed up and looking at TPS reports, their standard of professionalism is to get a building done in quality, in budget, and on time. They are not there to entertain people.

Bless you for writing this.

Most of you likely don't know that my full time job is Personal assistant to a wealthy businessman. Not infrequently I have to communicate with people on construction sites, or am on a site in person. Nothing that they do even comes close to offending me. Maybe because I grew up around businesses, and have heard almost everything, plus my father didn't raise me to be a prissy girl, who gets easily offended. Construction workers don't care about meetings, or how they are dressed. As the 'middleman ' often between my boss, and the workers, so long as they are doing their jobs correctly, they could show up wearing a loin cloth, and go through a tin per day of chewing tobacco for all i care. Besides someone spitting into their cup is much better than some jerk smoker blowing their filth all over others. When I ride offroad, often when stopped forna quick rest, I spit multiple times as my mouth is full of dirt and dust. If that offends people, then look away, better yet, walk away. If I were to invite a hard working person into a zoom call, nothing they did would bother me. These are the salt of the earth people, who chose to avoid the corporate world, and the stuck up people all too often in it. They are the ones who actually get the real work done, instead of Sitting around trying to justify their job by having yet another pointless meeting. I admire those hard working men and women, they build, create, and make a true difference. Not in their ivory tower, wondering what 'work' to make other people do next. My boss maybe wealthy, but before illness made it impossible for him to do much, he was on sites, getting his hands dirty as well. Much of the reason he hired me as his personal assistant, was my willingness to get down in the trenches, and dirt under my nails with the common people.

So is he paid extra hours on the zoom call? Any extra to have him turn on the camera? I really don't get why people insist on turning on the camera unless it is for a presentation. To me if I am turning on a video you better be showing some data or numbers or logs on the screen instead of your beautiful office or trophy shelves and awards on the wall.

Amen!

My camera is never on unless needed. You can look at an image from my trip to Italy in 2012...
At my job, video conferences are not optional but mandatory. While we are expected to always behave in a professional manner, whether on or off the job, we also must show a professional appearance while on the job. A colleague was sitting behind his desk at home during a video conference. He got up to reach for something. He had forgotten he was wearing only a button-down shirt that day. Luckily no Ken or Karen was part of the conference call and he still has his job. He did lose some dignity.

This post cracks me up. I work with "Real" people. Most are Ex-Marines. If this were to be brought up with my group it would be laughed at.
We do much worse around each other. Sit in on one of our conversations and see how long it takes before you get insulted or set straight.

I have a neighbor who was doing a major remodel to his house. While he was getting bids, if the contractor who was giving the estimates drove an older truck or smoked he would not hire them. His loss.

Yes, lots of data was presented in this meeting. Every person had to report their part.

How many years were you in the Marines ?

All the military people I know are probably the most professional people you'll ever meet. Both sides of my family were military (Army), and my current boss is an ex-Marine. He's the most professional guy you'll ever meet.

I agree with you and would rather work with Military or ex-Military than people off the street. Though my coworkers are far from politicly correct, which is fine by me.

I have to wonder if anyone considered this possibility, for even a second.
This guy doesn't want to be involved in this meeting.
So figures hey, if I keep spitting and hacking, someone may get tired of watching me, and then I can end this punishment sooner.

My boss knows how much I HATE teleconferencing, and that the split second it seems to stray off the subject, or I find any reason at all to end it, I do very quickly.
There is real work to be done, lets not waste time on ridiculous meetings, so Johnny over there can attempt to justify his job.

Politically correct, is a nice way for someone to say ' I am slow, lack the intelligence to understand jokes, or be witty myself.
Since I hate always being the dummy, that doesn't understand humor, i am going to whine about it not being PC'.

Just finished two B2B Zoom calls with the “inner circle” of around 10 … including 4 overseas …
Not one used the camera 👀

When we do the quarterly calls with our VP … funny how around 80% use the video !
And man … some have put together home offices that make our fish bowls (campus priced with a B) at work look like Petco Beta cups …
