I have a 1989 Toyota 4Runner with a 22RE engine. It have about 15,000 miles on the rebuild and I'm currently running Pennzoil Platinum 10w-30. The other day I noticed Rotella 5w-40 at Walmart for a great price and it started me thinking. I know that PP is an excellent product, but is an SM oil. I noticed that the Rotella is SJ and I believe Valvoline High Mileage is also SJ which, I believe, means more barrier wear additives. Since I don't have to worry about warranty or cat issues, what should I run?

Pennzoil Platinum 10w-30
Rotella or Rotella T 5w-40
Valvoline Maxline (Blend or Synthetic) 10w-30 or 10w-40

if you're not running the PP to 10k miles OCIs, I'd go with Chevron Supreme 10w30 or Havoline in same weight. on sale often here in the Pacific NW at $1.50 a qt. and less
change every 5k and pocket the savings for a new rig or a mancave playtoy.

22RE OHC engines are easy on oil

I'm lucky if I go 3k before I change the oil and that only happens 2 or 3 times a year. This is my "new" rig, it's nearly 100% new/rebuilt in the drive train and should last for many years to come. This is also my mancave playtoy and I'm waiting for the last few parts before I consider it "done." I usually end up changing the oil before long trips, the next one is in May and will be about 2,200 miles round trip to Moab.

I've actually considered going RLI simply for the "tree hugger" aspect since this is both my daily driver and also a trail rig. I'd love to swap all of the fluids to bio products, but can't justify the price.

I would run the Rotella T in it, it's a superb oil, I have ran it in a 97 Honda Accord 4 cylinder, car now has 240k on it, it did not affect gas mileage as many think with the heavier weight oils. Shell Rotella T in my opinion is one of the best oils made, run it, and forget it... I'm not sure what a good OCI would be with this oil, but you should have no problem getting long synthetic drain intervals out of it if that's what your looking for.
