after reading many posts on oil i am still confused.everyone says conventional oil can go 5000 miles between changes.but when it comes to synthetic everything is different.Mobil 1 Pennzoil Ultra ect can go 10.000 miles but store brands such as peak orielys st are good for five or six thousand miles.if it is synthetic why would it not be better than conventional.in other words any syn should be better than conventional or am i wrong.

I'm with you. The more I read the more confused I get. I was an Amsoil user for 25 years and I started at the top with 10k OCI's and over time moved down to OE at 5K OCI's. Now I'm using Kendall GT-1 Full Synthetic which is a group II and III oil with OCI's of 5K. I just got to where I didn't feel good about an oil being in there for 10K.

And now I'm thinking about going to Kendall's cheaper grade.

I've decided for now to just use OEM filters. Toyota, Honda and Nissan.

Well, synthetic SuperTech is better then regular good ol' Supertech.

You can't compare a $4/qt synthetic with a $7/qt competitor's option. Obviously the higher priced oil "Should" technically perform better.

funny, i'm completely backwards. I went from 3k OCIs to 10k OCIs with high quality synthetics and haven't looked back since.

I agree that with today's sales on conventional oil, it's really tempting to pour it in and do 5k OCIs for $5+/-

It really depends on the synthetic oil. Some synthetics do not look good in UOA after 6-7K miles of use. Some high quality conventionals look like a 10K is would be very possible.

It all depends on the driving conditions, the quality of the oil and oil filter as well as the vehicle in question.

All those things come into play when seeing how far any lube can last in your engine.

Look in the uoa gasoline engine forums and you will see mostly synthetic oil reports because folks are trying to figure out how many miles to run a synthetic oil change.

Some posters used to say the most important part of oil is the add pack. Look at the levels of calcium in most name brand synthetics. They're intended for extended oci.
