If you lock any accounts be sure you get a PIN so it will be possible to lift the freeze later. Store that PIN safely with a note identifying what it belongs to.
It depends. When my card was hacked I'd added a fraud alert and it was set to expire after 7 years.
Even though it was an alert and not a freeze, it did work. When I financed my HVAC replacement, within a minute of submitting my application, my cell phone rang with someone from the bank calling to verify that it was me opening the account. Financed Mom's HVAC replacement two years ago, and again, within a few minutes of submitting the application, the bank was calling me to verify that it was really me doing the application.
That having been said, I should probably look into a total freeze anyway. Can't be too secure nowdays...
This is pretty much an annual event that I get a notice about my information being hacked. Until people start going to jail for having poor security, nothing will change.

Annual? You lucky dog. I've been on the 2-3 minimum for a couple years now. 4-5 is becoming the norm. And most are health care facilities. I don't use credit, just buy stuff with cash. Yes I invest and yes sometimes those companies get hacked (big target) but so far none of mine.
100% agree on the penalties. To the point of a company should be shut down!!!
