Conducting your business inside a coffee shop

So I stop by my local neighborhood independent coffee shop multiple times a week. Every time I visit, there is a guy at one of the bar tops with his whole laptop station set up. It doesn’t matter the time of day or day of the week, he is always there. I asked one of the workers if he stays all day and they said yes. I wonder how many coffees he buys in the 8 hours he is there? I take it the owner doesn’t care that he hangs out all day. I just find it tacky that he chooses to do his remote work from inside a coffee shop 8 hours a day, 5 days a week.
 
I see many business dealings inside this coffee shop. It’s a good place to meet for a hour or so with a client. But to hang out for 8 hours with your whole elevated laptop stand just goes too far with me.

Maybe the person is homeless, but working hard to better themselves by having a steady job doing data entry. The coffee shop owner probably knows the real story, but isn't willing to share with others.

Many years ago a guy was telling me a story of someone riding his @$$ tailgating him on the interstate, inches away. Instead of taking it personal, he chose to think "that person may have a sick child in their car and are trying to get to the hospital". As soon as possible, he moved out of the way, the car quickly accelerating past. Any time I have someone moving up on me quickly, I automatically think "sick baby" and move over ASAP. The odds of this being the truth are infinitesimal, but how we perceive situations become our reality, thus leading to how we choose to react.
 
I was down on my luck in 2010 and due to lay offs was starting my own "consulting" business just enough business to keep my head afloat. I worked out of several chain restaurants, coffee shops, truck stops, all to a varying degree of interaction's with staff and customers alike. Back then, hot spots and mobile tethering was cost prohibitive. I didn't spend 8 hours at a time there for my own sanity sake.

Out of all of them, Starbucks always treated me right, were never rude, offered free refills and genuinely cared that I was a regular. I rotated through a few stores in my area and kept to my clean self. I'll always hold Starbucks stock and always prefer Starbucks due to this.

Hmm, maybe he's the owner and maybe only the manager knows? My uncle managed a business for years and then became the owner and never told the employees. He found it was better to just keep things as it was, until he sold it later.
One time my mom was being asked for "protection money" by some gangs locally and she hand a lawyer's business card to them, telling them she's just an employee and they should call the lawyer instead to ask for the payout.

They never called.
 
He’s probably working on his novel which will be a bestseller on Amazon. Everyone knows that your creativity is at its peak at a coffee shop.
JK Rowling used to do that.

About working in a coffee shop all day, Panera Bread has a bunch of students using their unlimited sip club membership to sit there all day with free drinks refill. Some coffee shop doesn't mind and like others said, it great an atmosphere that's better than dead silent. I had a friend selling video games in the shopping mall and he always wanted another friend's son to come play for free the entire day, because that makes the place more interesting and people started buying things instead of just walking by and not stopping. It's actually good for business.

Free wifi. As long as he isn't bothering others, it works out well. You have a guaranteed customer for drinks and food.

It's kind of like showers at Planet Fitness. Lots of truckers or homeless (living in cars) will have a membership just for the $20/month unlimited showers and a place you can interact with people that aren't gas station attendants or other truckers
 
Does he also do all of his work calls on speakerphone? Nearly every time I'm eating out there's someone using their speakerphone, whether it's for a video or for a phone call, and it's loud enough for everyone else to hear it. I absolutely hate it.

We need a modern day of "no shirt, no shoes, no service" .... "no headphones/earbuds - no service"
