I just bought two pureones at pepboys the other day and when i got home, i was just fiddling around with them to see if one of them had a defect or so... I dont know what it's called but it looks like that metal cheese grater that's in the middle covering the filtering media. For one of them, i can put my finger in and move that metal piece around. On the other pureone, i tried moving it around and it wont bulge. My question is that is this metal thing suppose to be moving around in my oil filter or is it suppose to be glued to the synthetic filtering media? My part number is PL14610.

Plus, it's not right at where the silicon seal or where the ADBV is at. It's inside where you have to put your finger through the small hole to reach the "metal cheese grater" that is covering that filtering media.

i think the one with the center tube moving around is a defect. go return it. i saw something like that with an Advance Auto Total Grip 7317 (basically the same DESIGN as the 14610) with that metal piece detached. all the others were attached.

The center tube of a Purolator 14610 does not fully touch the dome end near the Bypass Valve.

Can you slide the center tube Up & Down......or can you 'spin' the center tube ?

indeed, i can both slide it up and down and even spin/or rotate it with my finger... is this a defect? I dont really think that it would matter though... but if it's a defect then i'd definitely return it.

im not sure how much it slides, but i can "fully" slide it up and down. It can slide to where it touches the bottom of the filter and it can touch the ADBV. The metal can full rotate 360 degrees in which ever way. So by saying that much, is it suppose to move at all or is it suppose to be stuck/glued in around the sides with the media?

it is not supposed to be glued to the media at all. its really not even glued to the end caps. the media is held in place around the center tube and the end caps are glued to the ends of the media. therefore the only way for the centertube to be glued to anything is if a little of the glue holding the end caps to the media gets on the center tube. does that make sense?

i understand that you can "fully" slide it up and down. that is ok, but how much is "fully?" is it 1/8", 1/4", 1/2"...? like i said earlier, if you can move it roughly 1/4", i would suggest returning it. if the movement is only about an 1/8" or less... dont worry about it.

As long as the filtration media is bonded to the metal endcaps to prevent unrestricted bypass, you have NO problem. The center tube is incorporated merely to prevent filter element collapse. Whether it's short enough in relation to the filter's length such that it moves is irrelevant. Purolator, like WIX, uses a ribbed metal design for even better protection against collapse. Conversely, I've come across some center tubes made from perforated stiff paper. Even they seem to work OK. In principle, though, I like the e-core's molded, uniform length, nylon cage for this function that allows precise dimensional control for each filter model in the lineup.

thnks D$, i will do just that. I measured out that it can slide apprxmately a little more than 1/4 up and down. It feels too loose in my opinion. I came across some other pureone's today and those metal center tubes didn't move at all.

i would not be too concerned with the fact that you can move it. how far does is move up and down? if its just slightly, no big deal. if you can move it 1/4" then you might want to return it. center tubes are made a touch shorter to ensure that the media is seated into the glue on the end caps properly. if the center tube spins, thats not an issue at all. i dont think you have anything to worry about.
