Computer VGA and 1080p?

Found a 24" 1920x1080 display today, dual HDMI and VGA, along with A/V inputs. Price was right so it followed me home. Does 1920x1080 on HDMI but not on VGA. I haven't tested it on all my computers but so far, not so good. Monitor looks like it might be from 2012? Toshiba 24L4200U. Could it be that back then, VGA did not support 1080p?

Just wondering if I am missing something or if the monitor just has to be run with HDMI for max resolution.

Pulled out an ancient netbook that I have Linux Anti-X on (the only 32 bit distro I could find), and it would not run 1920x1080 on this monitor. But it runs it just fine on a monitor that I bought in 2016, with the same VGA cable. So I don't think it is cable nor computer--it's the monitor.

Oh well, the price was right (as in free).

I think it depends on the specification of the graphics chip. If it handles QSXGA, then it can theoretically support up to 2056 wide resolutions. One issue is that analog signals do not support communication between the monitor and card to negotiate supported resolutions. You may need to do some manual configuration to get it working correctly.

I'd have to poke around. Since the netbook did talk to my newer monitor and properly detect, I'm guessing it does have DDC (link). So it makes me think the older monitor must be doing some level of communication, as the older non-DDC setup is both ancient and would have had a breakpoint around 1024, I think, if it was defaulting to not communicating.

Too bad I didn't have a DE-15 breakout board, I'd sniff the I2C and see what it was sending.

Neither am I!

I did not configure it to run the monitor, but that command detects the netbook's screen and the external monitor. Not sure what it all means, but it seems to connect properly.

I've been toying with getting one of the cheap Onn 24" monitors. But not for much more I can get an Acer of similar size, so I might do that. What's wild is that this is the second free monitor I've scored in the last year, both working quite well, so I'm somewhat reluctant to spend money on a monitor...

I'm starting to run out of desk space, almost at 4 screens now. No I don't know why... other than I can.

Looks like the display driver in this TV/Monitor isn't built to put much weight into VGA. Elsewhere in the manual it says it supports 1080 interlaced over component video, though. But, good luck with that.

I kinda miss VGA. Lousy for overhead projectors but man, no meeting can now start today without wasting 5 minutes trying to get the technology to work. Ok part of that is the teleconference stuff but still. Remove Teams from the mess and it is still a fight to get your computer to connect to the not so smart tv.

I literally was given a 2019 24” LED yesterday. My old monitor (dual setup for wfh 1 day) is from 2001 and vga. So I used the vga cable and AC line cord, plug and play. Seems to be working at 1920x1080.

Here are the specs, looked them up.

For me, at least I now have 2x24”, and the laptop screen, just like at work.

I’ve actually wondered where the 1-2-3 screen settings are kept/known. Is it from the mac of the dock or usb-c hub?

Not sure. I know the computer can talk to the monitor and get some idea what it is. So maybe it just remembers by what is plugged in—oh this is the setup with dual vga, so set up this way.

But I suspect the docking station has a mac address and that would be easy to remember by.

Too bad the software I run doesn’t have such memory. At work I use the middle screen, but at home I use the right. The tool I use has various popup menus, and I find myself chasing them, as they like to go to their last used location.

Found a dell docking station at the transfer station the other weekend, but haven’t tried it out yet. But for free I wasn’t going to pass it up!

For example, my work laptop works at my desk at work, and at home, two setups, where 1-2-3 are extended properly with respective monitor settings.

When I swapped in the new to me 24”, it turned into 3 duplicated monitors. Maybe this is somehow a clue?

If I were to sit in a different desk at work, identical model of dock (we were hoteling during Covid), it would not be setup again even though all hardware is identical (dock and two monitors)….

I’ve had this same issue but all I had to do was set the resolution and refresh rate manually in the control panel. (Advanced)

What is dumb is that a 59.xx hz and a 60.xx hz are listed for every res. and only 59.xx hertz ever works.

60.xx never works over vga at any resolution.

Being a person that runs 3 random configurations for the same laptop at diff locations I can say that it’s great when it works but it likes to break in unfortunate ways, especially if vga is involved
