Usually a hard drive company will have free migration software you can download from their website. You can use that to clone a partition of your hard drive to another hard drive as long as at least one of them came from the vendor that you download the software from.

It is pretty easy to do.

Acronis True Image is the only thing that has reliably worked for me in cloning drives of different sizes.

It's a great upgrade in performance to go to an SSD, and theoretically they are more reliable.

I should also state that a clean install onto an SSD ends up with faster performance than cloning an older bloated windows install over. If clean installing your OS and programs onto the SSD is not too much of a hassle, do it that way.
