Castrol GTX HM versus Maxlife conventional. GTX HM 5w30 is 12 cst at 100c, Maxlife is 10.6 at 100c. Me likee thicker oils. While Valvoline is more forthcoming on their product data sheets, listing zinc, phos, calcium and moly percentages by weight, Castrol tells you squat, saying only that it contains 'proprietary additives'. Is one better than the other? I bought a 4 liter jug plus 2 extra quarts of Maxlife at Canadian Tire on sale for my Sunfire's oil change tomorrow or Tuesday, weather depending. I plan on going 6000-6500 miles on the OCI. Based on what I noticed during my current 6500 mile OCI with GC, I'll probably have to add at least 1-1.5 quarts over the length of the OCI. I know it's odd (putting it mildly) to have such concern over my 500 dollar beater but I want the motor to last as long as it can. It has some piston slap, a lot when cold, and I'm not exactly easy on it. Should I not worry so much and just run the Maxlife, or return it and get the GTX HM?
