Syntec 5W50 vs M1 15W50

Syntec 10W40 vs M1 10W40HM

Which of these is better, and why? Based on specs and personal experience.

I don't have the specs in front of me, but I do have experience with Syntec 10W40, 20W50 and M1 15W50.

I run these in my ATV's and they are always quieter with Syntec. The same goes for my vehicles. Not to say that M1 is bad at all, just an observation that others have had too.

I don't think it's enough to consider Syntec "better", but less noise is nice.

The M1 10W40HM that I`m using is SN rated. What I wonder is,why is the 5W30HM and 10W30HM SL rated, and the 10W40 is SN rated?

Mobil's HM oils have too much zddp to qualify for SM and SN in the 30-weights. SL allows 1000ppm, and that's how much M1 HM oils have. API doesn't put any limitations on zddp for 40-weights and above, so the 10w40 can have the SN rating.

I think you're using the right oil now. I wouldn't dump M1 HM for Syntec, unless it were GC. And then only maybe.

Yeah,I`ll more than likely stick with the M1 HM. I guess I just get bored and end up wanting to experiment a bit sometimes. Wonder why M1 5W50 isn`t sold here? Is it one of those "dealership only" oils?

I like that M1 HM oils use the same chemistry as the other M1 oils, just more ZDP.

Per FSM It calls for 10W30 for fuel mileage only. Recommends 10W40-20W50 if car is going to be either raced or driven at sustained high speeds. Says to use 5W30 if car is going to be used in below freezing temps *only*. Do not use 5W30 on the turbo model, and 5W20 is never to be used.

So yeah,10W40 is probably the *sweet spot*.
