Good morning fellow Bitogers - 66 degrees here in Central Florida right now with a predicted low of 24 tonight.

To be honest, I'm a little concerned about the orange trees remaining at my parents place, (about 9 acres). If it gets too cold, it will ruin the fruit, (Valencia Oranges which are not ready to pick for a few more months). If it gets really cold, it could kill the trees which are already in a weakened state due to citrus greening.

I plan on lighting some fires in the weakest part of the grove tonight (I don't have any of the old smudge pots, but I do have a tremendous amount of firewood from a storm this past spring).

What are the rest of you guys doing to battle the cold?

I don't live in FL (I live the Atlanta tundra of 6 degrees tonight

). I thought spraying the fruit with water to create ice around it extended it's life. Or does quality deteriorate when you do that?

Either way, hope all goes well.

Staying inside mainly. -14F here right now with wind chill at -41F.

we just wear more layers and deal. The stuff in our garden has been covered with snow.

Good luck protecting the fruit. How many acres did there used to be? Hopefully it hasnt been converted to those obnoxious mcmansion developments...

No fruit here, but it is cold (~27) ... supposed to be 9 tonight...

I feel cheated though as there was no snow last night as predicted...

Heat pumps work terribly at this sort of tempature and a fire will cause my wife respiratory issues so I guess we will be huddling around a space heater while watching the little blue "AUX heat" light come on and off...

. 45 here now, going to 11 tonight. Considering a move to Tampa.

It was mid 30's yesterday, so I moved some snowbanks around, with hopes that the rain of today would pack 'em real low and out of the way. I did see on the news this morning that the FD's were starting to recommend removing snow from the roof, so perhaps I'll have to do that tonight, should be in the 20's I think.

Honestly, -10F isn't that bad. As long as there isn't a breeze. It's actually pretty nice at 10F and down, the snow starts squeeking and making cool sounds as you walk on it; if you go walk around a large frozen body of water it makes cracks as the ice expands and moves around.

But I'm inside for the week, holidays over, time to get back to work.

Yep

-32c now and -50 with the wind. Getting dressed for work now.

Hello duckryder

Many systems have an emergency heat setting which utilizes heat strips that use electricity to heat up and are more efficient in temps below 40 or so. Check your thermostat. Cold here in AL too. About 14F now and 6F predicted tonight.

Called off work. The way my commute is, too many things have to work properly for me not to spend half the day traveling, and Metra can't run trains on time in good weather. I've already received delay notices that trains are behind up to an hour, so in reality it's probably closer to 90 minutes or more.

Days like this are part of the reason I carry over the maximum PTO time whenever I can.

10F right now with a -6F windchill. I don't think the wind chill has been this cold in my area since I've been alive.

Yes it does have emergency heat... it really runs up the power bill... I guess it might not be any worse than a space heater or two... Practically If I understand it correctly the heat strips also work on Aux heat, but if the emergency heat is activated then the compressor does not run and heat is provided exclusively by the heat strips vs on an as needed basis when the compressor can't cope...

I'm exaggerating a little bit anyway it is not quite as bad as I make it out to be...

I was raised in NY & PA as a youngster so I know cold, anyone who thinks Oklahoma does not get very cold should think again, this morning the actual air temp is 2 degrees. The problem here is people don't expect it and are not prepared for it. Oklahoma's weather is influenced by so many factors, from the Gulf of Mexico to the Rocky Mountains, always some weird weather.

Wow, that's pretty cold for FL. When was the last time your grove had to go through a freeze like that? I thought smudge pots and wind machines were pretty much necessary anytime it got below about 30. I was working in Ft. Lauderdale back circa 1991 and it got down to about 28-30 while I was there one week. For some reason 30 there feels SO much colder than 15 in Durango :-p

It's cold everywhere right now. Best of luck saving the trees; i'd offer to help if I were there.

Hopefully you have some sort of freeze insurance.
