I need some help. I'm going to use Auto Rx in both of my vehicles (1994 Olds Cutlass Supreme - 3.1 L/177,000 & 1999 Chevy Suburban 5.7 L/102,000). Once I'm finished with that for both, I'll be ready for something new.

It's likely I'm going to use Amsoil in both engines. But regardless of what brand I use, I'd like your feedback on what weight would be appropriate. It's just now starting to get cold (low 20's in the morning and mid 40's in afternoon). Very soon (by the end of the year/beginning of next year) the morning temps will be in the single digits to possibly below 0 with the highs in the low 20's.

Thoughts? Recommendations? Thanks in advance for your help.

We get colder that that here (days in the singles and nights colder).

I'd run a dino 5w30 durning oct till feb, then 10w30 dino for the rest of the time.

Take care, Bill

I'm changing the oil in my friends car tomorrow. It's a 1995 Cutlass with the 3.1 litre. Based on my research here on BITOG I'm going with the Havoline 5w30 dino with a Supertech filter. The 5 quart jug and filter came to just over $10. Oh, 102,000 on the motor.

what does your manual say about oil wt and temp. I would look at that first. but if it calls for a 30 oil. then either 5w30 or 0w 30 would do fine. I will be using GC 0w30 next month.

In '95 there weren't any 0w30 on the market.
The recent advancements in the lubricant technologies brought us the grade that has been developed to offer maximum protection in the cold weather.

For that engine:

1st Choice: 5w30 Amsoil
2nd Choice: 0w30 GC
3rd Choice: 0w30 Amsoil

If a higher viscosity is needed:

5W-40 Amsoil Euro Formula
5W-40 Elf LDX
