Cold Cranking Tests

Has anyone ever seen a test where the cold cranking torque was measured on an engine with various types and grades lubricants? It could even be the number of amps required to turn the engine over. I've found the Cold Crank Simulator tTest (ASTM D-5293) that Amsoil parades regularly, but I'm looking for somethign mroe real world. I did find a dyno test where power gains were noted on an HP engine from conventional to synthetic techarticles/synthetic_vs_conventional_oil/> but little else.

The CCS test and the mini rotoviscometer test for cold pumping ARE the standard industry tests used to evaluate extreme temp performance.

I don't mean to be a nagging guy - if there was a "real world" test run then all the naysayers would say it's not standardized. If Amsoil runs a ASTM standard test, it's called parading and must be not of this real world. Sure they use cold temp properties in their ads (I guess - what ads?).

Synthetics crank and pump significantly better when cold within a SAE grouping. There is a reason 0W conventional oils are rather scarce.
 
Chill Pablo! You read a lot into my post than was actually there. My "parades" comment was merely due to the fact that when I Googled various search terms, the same Amsoil info came up on dozens and dozens of different Amsoil websites. That's pretty close to a parade! Nothing else came up under any search terms I could think of so I thought I'd ask the BITOG brain trust if they had seen anything else. I have a specific reason for the question I asked... and it wasn't to bash Amsoil. I'm simply trying to find some data that's a little more understandable to the average Joe.
 
Why not perform your own test? If you have a hand held tach that is accurate at low RPMs, wait for the cold weather to arrive, fill with oils you're comparing, run in, park over night, pull coil wire or FI pump relay fuse and crank. Hard part will be to insure the temps and battery charge are identical. And, gelation with dinos will be hard to observe.

427Z has a great idea or you could rig a standard electric motor to an oil pump, and plumb it to an engine (or rigged flow manifold) and do some time/volume flow tests.

Baically all these will be doing is some analog of viscosity.
 
Not a bad idea, but my deadline will long be over before I could get that done. I might think about something for the winter, though.
