There's no masterful reason why coil beats leaf.. maybe durability. The filter should have a bypass pressure rating.. if the pressure rises above X, then the bypass kicks in. As long as thats correct, no worries.
The leaf "spring" in most filters isn't a spring at all. in the filters I've opened, they've been rigid spacers made of stamped steel, and can be bent by hand. because of their location in the filter, they don't bend in service, and probably do their job fine IMO. I know that some manufacturers tout their coil springs, but I'm not sure how much difference it makes.
Not always, but most of the time, the actual filter is longer (and hopefully "bigger") in the filters with a leaf spring. I have noticed it is much shorter in the WIX vs others.
WIX and others might make up for this with pleats or different media, but I myself like the larger "filter" in my small filter size applications?????

Are you sure that is accurate? I believe from all the pictures I have viewed on this site and my own experience the type and position of the filters by pass valve makes the difference as you state "larger filter in a small filter application" weather it is a coil spring or leaf spring does not matter concerning that issue.
