Coil Or Leaf Spring?

In an oil filter, either can provide the necessary performance. From my observations, a leaf spring offers superior media positioning.

I can't imagine it really matters unless the filter is being used for over 15k miles, if even then, but I could see your train of though. Metal is metal and will hold fine unless (somehow) abused or dfective. I've honestly never put much thought into it. I've never had an oil filter failure or noticed any issue with filters (at least being viewed externally) and I've used quite a few different brands that i'm sure have different styles internally. As long as it doesn't leak and my oil is being filtered, I am a happy camper, but to each their own.

Interesting. Didn't know that.

I will say that a filter with a coil spring would likely fare better from a drop than a filter with a leaf spring

I honestly dont think it matters. As long as you dont hear the element moving inside the can prior to installation, you are good to go BOF.

If I had to pick a filter for dropping onto the floor, it'd probably be a Mobil 1 though. Watch your toes!

I don't buy that leaf spring is better line. If that can get get hits in the top by whatever road debris, I think the spring would be better, but that's just me.
