I am a complete amateur at car repair. Oil changes are about my limit. Don't some auto supply houses let you use their automotive code readers in the parking lot? I don't have the knowledge or the facilities (condo owner) to do any work myself, but the idea a putting a tech's first-born through college because of an exaggeration of a problem really bothers me. I never mind paying for honest work, but I am like the rest of you and don't like to be taken advantage of. I just got a "check engine" light and I'm wonmdering if there's anything I can do before I go to a repair shop?

'02 Impala 3.4 engine 67,000 miles.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Yes go to the auto parts store and get the code read. They are your friend. It could be a simple as you failed to tighten the gas cap. The codes don't always tell you exactly what the problem is, but it's worth a shot. You might be better armed with information when you go in the the repair store. Good luck.

auto zone will gladly read the code for free.
some Chrysler/Dodge/Jeeps allow you to read the code through the odometer by cycling the key or holding the reset button at startup

to the site!
Auto zone is your friend!

I know Auto Zone would let you borrow their scanner for free. I eventually bought a $39 basic scanner so I wouldn't have to go to Auto Zone.

It paid for itself the very first time my mom's car stalled and I scanned for codes and found out it was the Cam Shaft Position sensor that died.

I too bought one of those scanners. The last time I used Auto Zone, they read the codes, mumbled something unintelligible and walked back into the store. Thanks a lot!

Impala, write down the codes they find and report back. We should be able to guide you through the problem.

If you are in Ca. you are screwed - when it comes to Autozone and getting your codes checked. Not their fault - is another stupid state law!
