code p055 - large evap leak on a 2000 lincoln continental

guys im working on a friends 2000 contineital with the 32 valve engine. its throwing a cel that says P0455. i understand this troublecode to mean that there is a large leak in the gas tank's evaporative emissions lines/solenoids/canister somwhere.

any ideas? theres an awfull lot of lines down there to check.

Check the gas cap, it might be defective.

The O-ring on the cap may be broken and missing. If not, try rubbing some dielectric grease on it, and see if that helps.

The next step would be to locate the vent solenoid that's near the fuel tank. Don't know about Conneys, but it's above the spare tire on Explorers. Since the solenoid is located under the car, it's very suseptible to corrosion.....

Could be the vapor can in the engine bay or the solenoid that's inline with the vapor can. My T-bird had a solenoid failure and threw a CEL, no harm to performance but it's annoying with the CEL light on.

Any emissions-testing station should be able to test it for you (but that probably doesn't help if you live in an area without emissions tests).

Some Ford cars have the vent solenoid in the engine compartment.

I'd check the vacuum lines connected to the vent solenoid--they might be leaking. The rubber lines on my mom's 1997 Ford Escort were deteriorating pretty badly, and they were only 8 years old. I have no idea other than that either Ford or their supplier cheaped out on the lines, because the ones in my 1988 Mustang 5.0 are OK and it's 17 years old.
