Pina Calada! Was looking at Volvo VDS 5 (reduced HTHS) oils safety data sheets, most of them seems to contain coconut oil, why is that ? Only Shell and Mobil VDS 5 doesnt have that but they seem to be GTL base oil.

The SDS for the Volvo VDS 5 shows it's GTL-based:Was looking at Volvo VDS 5 (reduced HTHS) oils safety data sheets, most of them seems to contain coconut oil, why is that ? Only Shell and Mobil VDS 5 doesnt have that but they seem to be GTL base oil.
I'm wondering if they are just using the same additive package? Perhaps it's a Lubrizol or Afton pack?Coconut oil, reaction products with boric acid. Seems to be common in many 5W30 oils. But why is it not used in those VDS-5 oils that are GTL base ?
Bought a big jar of coconut oil at Costco couple months ago for cooking.
Glad I found a new use for it! Can finally finish the oil before it spoils.

Most Vegetable Oils (VO) are transesterified into functional esters, including coconut oils. Was looking at Volvo VDS 5 (reduced HTHS) oils safety data sheets, most of them seems to contain coconut oil, why is that ? Only Shell and Mobil VDS 5 doesnt have that but they seem to be GTL base oil.
Coconut oil is somewhat of a universal lube in south India (where there are a lot of coconut palms all along a very long coastline, so..) for such applications, or to lube a squeaky door hinge, that sort of thing. The weather out here is tropical hot (texas gulf coast / florida weather) so it doesn't ever become tacky and solid unless you refrigerate it.I use coconut oil in my bar and chain oil (and bicycle chain oil) It makes it vey tacky at low and normal temperatures but becomes fluid and thin when heated up a bit. very polar stuff too.
