Coast Guard announces 3 p.m. ET press conference following 'debris field' discovery for missing submarine

I saw a video on the construction of the submersible and couldn’t believe the end with the window was glued on. I’m sure it’s strong glue but still. Many times I’ve seen mentioned how they thumbed their nose at certification and I’d imagine part of the certification process would be stress testing and number of dive cycles it would last.
Our professional pilots will know for sure, but wasn't there an airliner back in the day where a cockpit window blew out, primarily due to a fastener failure, but secondarily because the window was (by design) installed from the outside?

It sounds like the Titan submersible vessel faced the opposite situation, whereby the window should have been designed to be installed from the outside.

It seems that it would be much safer to have a design whereby the pressure differential forced the window to stay in place, rather than trying to pop it out (in the case of an aircraft) or in (in the case of the submersible).

It's an attempt to prevent a failure. Wouldn't you consider a jumper left when it should have been removed a failure?

That they need a sign like that tells me that it's not an uncommon occurrence.
The bottom line is nobody has been killed in a falling elevator in the U.S. in decades-or longer. But yet left hand turns are a major source of auto accidents. That's why these funky intersections are popping up (continuous flow) to prevent them.

I gotta say I am so disappointed in the experts, especially the coast guard. For days, the coast guard was out there on a dumb patrol pattern, wasting tax payer dollars. I’m a complete amateur and I would’ve sent a craft down to the titanic area immediately to investigate. Instead they patrolled an area the size of Connecticut. And lo and behold, the imploded submersible was a mere 1600 ft from the titanic. Ultimately, I wonder if OceanGate already knew and were stalling. What kind of professional naval organization doesn’t have a live telemetry reading of the sub at all times? Just like with covid, these experts were incompetent and useless to society.

/end rant

Disappointed in the US “Coast Guard” acting in international waters far from our coast off the coast of Canada?
I’m disappointed that people think we should be able to react so quickly and that we need to be able to rescue in waters where most all ships can not access depths like those.
That’s a job for salvage crews not the US Coast Guard.
The Coast Guard was surface searching for a vessel that if working correctly the vessels system would have floated it to the surface in an emergency or loss of power.

The solution around here has been to convert intersections to protected-only left turns.

Continuous-flow intersections are used when left turning traffic volumes are very high. Otherwise, a protected-only left turn is sufficient.

True. I’ll issue a retraction on the coast guard bit. I guess I’m mostly disappointed at OceanGate for misleading the coast guard into believing their sub was the bread of God and that the safety mechanisms would certainly activate and the sub would automagically pop up and just need rescuing. It was the duty of Ocean Gate to send down another rover to investigate. I have a hunch they knew it was already over from when they lost coms.

The vessels came from offshore construction …

I agree with CKN and alarmguy. What is your day job??? Or perhaps you meant to have that question in the HUMOR section of the forum.

I believe the CG, or whomever, sent the ROV to the area as soon as it was available after having been transported 300+? miles from somewhere, after doing the surface search which was 1) where the sub would be assuming the systems worked and 2) what they were able to do at the time. I have faith in the USCG knowing how to do a search...

Now that post made sense!! EUREKA!!!

Search and rescue is not a cut and dried operation. The distance of this submersible from rescue assets played a huge role right from the start. Ships just don’t start their engines and go. Assets like deep sea rovers need to be arranged and transported to the site.

This is why there is a Law of the Sea. If a distress message goes out and you are nearby you change course and head for that position.

I wish I could say it bothers me, call it cold, sadistic but rich people dying doing questionable things never bothers me. I have more sympathy for normal people dying of normal things like cancer. Play stupid games....
..and their families, etc? Outside of committing certain crimes and the like, I feel sympathy for anyone getting grievously injured or dying while pursuing something exciting. Now would I have gone on that vehicle???? No... But cars, airplanes, motorcycles, boats, mountainbiking....there are many 'questionable things' to do for fun that may kill you, rich or poor.

Nobody has said it yet, are the folks in the Sub members of the World Economic Forum? The live in the pods, eat the bugs, and be happy, folks.
