Co-workers 2000 Jetta, VR6.

A co-worker indicated he was running Mobil 1 5w30 in his 2000 Jetta VR6. I told him I thought it was a 40 weight motor and probably should be running Mobil 1 0w40, which carries many more specs, but I wasn't sure.

What is the correct oil for this car, according to VW?

Are there any ramifications of pressing on with this current regime? (I am pretty sure he is a 3K OCI'er)
He is probably @ 80 or 90K miles now.

European cars generally call for an oil with a High Temp/High Shear rating of 3.5. That usually means a 40 weight oil with very few exceptions. Too bad the people who sell him the Mobil don't know this. Not every VW dealer knows either. imo, ANY 40 weight oil with the correct "W" for winter rating will suffice. Since he is into it enough already to buy Mobil 1, "selling" him on the Mobil 1 0w-40 with the correct VW specs should be easy. There is a newer 5w-40 "Truck & SUV" Mobil 1 that is really nice and won't burn off like the other Mobil 1s. He could also spice up the 5w30 with a Q of 15w-50. Just send him here for the scoop. German Syntec 0w30 is another oil to look at, AutoZone only.

5w30 is ok, but 40wt. is a better idea since the VR6 runs pretty high oil temps, and 40wt will have better cushion for timing chain guides.

Rotella T 5w-40 might be a good choice since it can be found at almost any Walmart, and is cheaper than M1. 7.5k OCI is easily attainable with VR6.
