One of my co-workers recently purchased a 2010 Volvo S40 with the 2.4 liter. We got to talking about the car and of course the oil and seems Volvo is only requiring API rated oil with 5w30 being recommended.

I was surprised it doesn't require a ACEA A3 or better oil.

Any recommendations for oil type?

his car let him worried about it

, some time if you try be closer to him and talk to him about what oil he should use he might feel offensive. and if you told him an oil, and he use something else, you might also take offensive too. over internet where you dont have to see the person is ok. and some time it good to leave a real life person alone and let him made a decision

I talk to few friend about oil i think it good for them, and it dint turn out well at all.

Usually you can get more insight when you look at what Volvo recommends in Europe.

I'm sure though if the manual recommends 10w30 it will be just fine for 5-7500k / 1 yr OCI whichever comes first.

I appreciate the feedback. I was really curious if anybody has had any oil related issues with this engine. It holds almost 7 quarts and Volvo does recommend 10k or 1 year oil changes.

Any body have any experience with this engine?

If he wants to follow 10k/12mo OCI, with non-severe driving conditions, he should use synthetic oil of the correct grade when the car is under warranty.

If it's NA or the low-boost turbo, any good quality 5W30 is fine. For the high-boost engine, I'd go with an A3-rated oil, based on my own experience with both engines.

That's the good old 5-cylinder white block engine that's been in production since the early 90's. It's not a piece of junk German motor that requires cocktail oils only so that it can grenade at 80K.

1yr / 7.5K on 5w30 synthetic would be just fine, Volvo has used Castrol oils for ages if you want a specific brand. New T-belt at 100K and trans flush with Mobil 3309 every 50K.

I hope that you're wearing your fire proof underwear.
The BMW, Audi and VW owners will be coming with torches.

Yeah, I'd sure like to know what he is talking about, as I have plenty of very high mileage German engines in use.

The manual may approve of conventional oils, but in every turbo Volvo I have worked on, conventional oils lead to severe varnish. Use synthetic only, however, I am not sure which synthetic is absolutely the best for this car.
