I'd argue that this is the most important "advanced feature" (if you even want to call it that) for a dryer. It'll help prevent from over-drying clothes and will save you on energy costs.

No, you probably don't need 10-12 cycles, etc. But for $500 - $600, you'll never be able to get a good energy-efficient set. For that amount you might be able to get a descent front-load washer. Front-load washers use less water and spin the clothes more dry, so the dryer doesn't have to run as long to get them completely dry. The result is energy savings which over time will pay for itself.

This is exactly what I'm about to do. I'm going to list our used, but in perfect working condition, GE electric dryer on Craigslist and see if I can $100 which will help subsidize the cost of a new set.
