The wire filament in most mass air sensors is pretty fragile. They're supposed to periodically "self clean" by heating themselves up to burn off contaminants. I wouldn't even bother with "cleaning" one unless I was having a performance issue or it was triggering a CEL. If you feel like you must, spray the MAF cleaning spray liberally on it and DO NOT touch the filament or get the nozzle of the spray can really close to it when you're spraying.

Best,

Every 3000 mile is way too often.
Unless you have weird dusty conditions and a gauze type air filter.
Dirt or over oiling them cause MAF grief.

Once every year is great maintenance. They are VERY sensitive.
You can fix major and minor anomalies, and prevent future ones.
I like to take the MAF off of the car and spray it both ways [direct it towards the filament or all over the large grid type].

While you are at it, clean the throttle body bore and plate real nice. No carbon or dirt at all in that area! A lint free rag with conventional solvent and your finger or screwdriver work well.

+1 on both previous post, great advice,i do clean mine on the GMQ at my 5k oci the 4.6 modular v8's are the most sensitive i have ever came across and the least bit of dirt will cause a definite very noticeable performance drop.
