if you use simple green be sure your engine is cold.

i've used it and it works pretty well, but there are some other good products out there as well. the s100 total bike cleaner works well in the engine compartment as well.

Simple Green is dilute oven cleaner, so it works good. Spray it all over an engine as it sure makes it look pretty. Losers whine about the fact that it seeps into mechanical and electrical connections and corrodes the aluminum and copper over time, but hey, what do you expect from people who waste their time cleaning with less effective chemicals ?

[I use it for the driveway and parts without crevices that I can rinse well, and don't worry about steel as basic solutions don't really bother the stuff. I don't spray engines or assemblies with it, instead I'll use a petroleum based cleaner on greasy surfaces, WD40 or some other old timey engine cleaners work ok when brushed, rinse, and maybe Armor All everything and brush & wipe. I wouldn't steam clean either, but it seems popular.

I've had very good results with engine degreasers.Just spray it everywhere in the engine compartment, wait about half an hour, then go to a self service car wash and use the high pressure spray.Man, it leaves it super clean!!!

What happens if you use simple green and the engine is warm/hot?

it will stain and etch anything aluminum or coated steel. for my engine i dilute it about 50/50 with water, then mist it over then engine. let it sit a few minutes, then rinse it off. take a brush to the worst places.

i wish i had pictures of the engine bay of my last car. stained the block, ate up all the small unpainted steel brackets.

and the engine was just warm, not hot when i did it.

i've been using simple green for years, and will continue to do so, but it screwed it up quite a bit.

i hit submit too quickly.

from the faq:

Aluminum - Is it safe to use Simple Green on aluminum?
Simple Green products have been successfully and safely used on aircraft, automotive, industrial and consumer aluminum items for over 20 years. However, caution and common sense must be used: Aluminum is a soft metal that easily corrodes with unprotected exposure to water. The aqueous-base and alkalinity of Simple Green or Crystal Simple Green can accelerate the corrosion process. Therefore, contact times of All-Purpose Simple Green and Crystal Simple Green with unprotected or unpainted aluminum surfaces should be kept as brief as the job will allow - never for more than 10 minutes. Large cleaning jobs should be conducted in smaller-area stages to achieve lower contact time. Rinsing after cleaning should always be extremely thorough - paying special attention to flush out cracks and crevices to remove all Simple Green/Crystal Simple Green residues. Unfinished, uncoated or unpainted aluminum cleaned with Simple Green products should receive some sort of protectant after cleaning to prevent oxidation.

So did I when I was a detailer at a body shop. I may look for some regular engine cleaner next time.

K thanks..i may try some of this stuff..

I use mild car wash soap mixed with water and spray it all over. I use Engine Brite on spots where there is heavy oil/grease. I then rinse with low pressure and air dry it. I do this all with a cold engine. I don't have to worry about hard chemicals doing any harm to anything. I do this about once every 6 months, and my engines always look great.

I've also used simple green, watered down a bit, and have never had a problem with it. I'm just more cautious now, and car wash soap is about as mild as it gets.

if you want to ruin your engine suface and all the other parts in the compartment then use sonas motor kote...stay away from this stuff!!!many other people have complained about this #@$%! in autotopia...use a mix of vinylex and water will give you a great shine and protect everything.
