Well, believe it or not, the manual from my old 88 Civic called for 10w-30 motor oil in the 5-spd manual trans. No reference to any specific MTF. I used 5w-30 M1 for several years (I was using it in the engine anyway), until the M1 10w-30 became easily available. That trans worked perfectly for over 10 years and 150k miles. Of course, times have changed, and there are some very good mission-specific MTFs out there.

Actual text from most GM owner's manuals:

Quote:
If your engine catches fire because you keep driving with no coolant, your vehicle can be badly damaged. The costly repairs would not be covered by your warranty.

Now we know why they need it.

25 years ago I added a couple of quarts I had laying around as top up oil to my Twin- Cam Europa before I had the engine rebuilt. It was burning oil at the rate of a quart every 250 miles. I couldn't tell any difference from the 20W-50 that was the regular fill. I also usually added a couple of cans of STP in addition to the 20W-50 to increase the oil pressure.
I also topped up with some straight 60 wt and 70 wt race oil.
Heck, I even added some 140 wt gear oil!
Despite the high oil consumption and the very heavy oil the engine actually ran well once I changed the plugs to platinum which solved the oil fouling problem.
Even a freshly rebuilt engine used a quart ever 800 miles or so.
The engine has no valve guide seals which was not uncommon with engine designed back in the 50's and 60's.

Yep. Same thing was recommended in the manual transaxle of my uncle's 87 Accord.
