Ck-4 oil in a 4 cycle air cooled engine

What makes compare small OPE air cooled engines with large displacement diesel engines?
Those engines run at max. 1.5-2K RPM and have 15-20 times more oil and coolant than your engine.
They may run hotter because of the turbos, but at the same time they dissipate heat better than any smaller engine.
Also Rotella oils are rated ACEA E9 and E11 diesel oils and those have HTHS lower than 3.5 cP.

I'm just asking because I see several times people mentioned the better lubricating properties of the Rotella oils along with their low price. So it makes me think people like to run cheap oil in their OPE, but justify that with better lubrication.
Why don't you run Rotella diesel oil in your car engine if it lubricates and shears better than the PCMO?
I run once diesel oil in my Civic, and I can tell you - it didn't feel good.
The short answer is that T6, as well as many other ck-4 oils, are not SP rated and fail to meet warranty requirements of late model gas engines.

They are not rated because are diesel oils and they have their own different ratings. It's not only the SP rating, they are not rated for gasoline engines. Run Rotella in a gasoline engine that is out of its warranty then.

I'm not sure what your point is. The suitability of a ck-4 oil for ise in an air cooled ope engine has very little to do with the suitability of a ck-4 oil in an automobile engine.

My point is that you OPE engine works more similarly to a car engine than to a large displacement diesel engine. And my main point is that the Rotella diesel oils are inferior to the car motor oils and motorcycle oils too and people use them only because they are cheaper.

Sounds like its a good thing no one puts T6 in a Civic then! There are those who use T6 because it meets cummins ces 20086 though. And dont overlook the fact that many ck-4 oils DO meet SN and even SP and satisfy ope warranty requirements.

Thread drift off now please

Depends on what oils we're talking about.
You can build a junk CK-4 oil.
Now we're back on topic. I think those who target a ck4 oil for ope aren't generally choosing the junk they are choosing all fleet variety. At least that's how I read the use of delvac 1

Granted some will run whatever is on hand but for me I would rather protect my investment and the delvac appears to be a good choice. I get that soot control is a dont care but I haven't seen evidence yet that an SP GF-6 would perform better in 100 deg ambient temps.

In comparing mobile-1 10w-40 with delvac 1 5w-40 i found HTHS for latter but not the former. In the published PDS anyway. Anyone find HTHS for the 10w-40? I thought it would be amusing to test the "oil for diesels has better HTHS" theory .. for oils of the same 100 c viscosity classification

Hi

Enjoyed the discussion of using diesel rated oil in a gas lawnmower. My journey and ultimate reasons for choosing delvac 5w-40 in my john deere x370 might be different from yours. So let me ask: those of you using a diesel oil in your OPE-- why did you make this choice as opposed to an automotive SP rated oil?
HPL does sell a Small Engine Oil that is Ck-4 Rated or specked. Look at the speck and forget about the Diesel thing.
