CK-4 oil also meeting SP

Here ya go. In NAPA today and saw the elusive CK-4/SP. ACEA sequences E9/E7. And 5w30 to boot.

Probably a "thick" 5w30. Let me see if I can get some numbers on this and post later. PAO content?

I'd consider this for my VW 1.4 TSI.

xw-30 CK-4/SP are not as elusive as CK-4/SP xw-40's are. That's why OP was asking about 5w-40 CK-4/SP. Many oil companies are not wanting to reduce their additive package in their 40 grades yet. Maybe in the foreseeable future though?

SHU 5w-40 in EU is still an api sn+ , meanwhile the 0w-40 have been api sp for many years. The 0w-40 lost Porsche approval when going to api SP from api sn+

Mobil's Canadian site has more specs for this oil than the US site. The few specs that are provided on the US site are identical to the Canadian specs, so it's probably the same formulation.

HTHS is 3.6 cP, so about the same as a typical 10W-30 or 5W-40 HDEO.

I would assume that it's considered to be an "ILSAC grade", despite the high HTHS, meaning it wouldn't have exemptions from some of the API SP requirements that the thicker grades have. In other words, it would probably need to have 800 ppm phosphorus to meet both API SP and CK-4.

Good to know but you're talking about light duty Petrol/Diesel Euro oils. OP asking about API CK-4 oils that would be similar to your heavy duty E oil category in Europe.

My bad. I was just surprised to see any CK-4/SP.

The kinematic viscosity comes in at 12 and 73 for 100 and 40 degrees respectfully. A little on the thick side but in line with with some Euro 5w-30's

I'm kinda trying to understand how this can be both E9/E11 and E7? From what I can gather E9/E11 ash content is <=1.0, whereas E7 limits are <= 2.0? I wish we could get detailed properties on this oil.

Ahhh... Thanks just read your post. Yes the Canadian site does indeed list more details. Seems ash content is right at 1.0

Appreciate you sharing what you've found & it could still be helpful to some that may want other options. It doesn't claim to meet ACEA E11 just E6, E7, & E9. Yes, E7 is less than 2% Ash & E9 is less than 1% ash. That oil is a low ash oil & must be <1% ash therefore Mobil can claim to be approved for those specifications.

So if this oil has API Service SP and an owners manual says to use an oil meeting SP and the viscosity is correct, then this oil would be what is recommended?

Not saying I would necessarily use a HDEO in a gasser, but this is a 5w30 api SP.

Yes, perhaps be a bit thicker & might have slightly more additives than regular PCMO (Towards the higher SP limits)? I don't see a lot of 5w-30 CK-4/SP virgin oil analysis so not certain but it does have my curiosity. :unsure:
Probably not "Resource Conserving" though like a regular PCMO would be since it'll be towards the higher range of a 5w-30 viscosity. If your wanting to squeeze out every last MPG then PCMO would be what you'd want.
