Civic MTF Sticker shock

With the 27,000 mile mark approaching on my '04 Civic, I decided to change out the MTF with OEM Honda MTF fluid. After reading on BITOG that the Civic MTF is shot around 30k miles, I figured what the hey.
So I go to the dealer and ask for 2 quarts (Civic has a 1.6q sump). The parts girl says "that will be $15.40 with tax!

Why is this stuff so much money? I don't regret changing it becauuse it shifts like butter now

, much better that before so I guess that the MTF does wear out around 30k miles.Its funny because the manual says to change at 110,000 miles for normal service, or 60,000 miles for severe. The manual says that 10w30 motor oil is ok for a temporary fill, but to change it out as soon as possible with Honda MTF. I didn't want to take any chances. The Honda MTF does smell like gear oil...

isnt it a synthetic lube. and arent most synthetic mtf's about $8ish/qt. not too much off the beaten path.

Redline: $7.95/qt
AMSOIL: $7.70/qt
Royal Purple: $7.95/qt
Honda: ~$7.70/qt

This January I bought 2 quarts MTF at my local Honda dealer and they charged me $4.79 per quart. I called the same dealer this week cause I have to change the ATF Z1 fluid in my mom's 01' Civic and they wanted $5.39 for the Honda Z1.

Honda dealers know that customes have no choice but to get their lubes/fluids from the dealership. If you buy your fluid online.....they charge crazy shipping costs.

BTW, I called a local Saturn dealership asking how much was ATF Z1 transmission fluid for the Vue, hoping it would be cheaper at a Saturn dealer, they wanted $11 per quart.

I guess $15-20 every 30-60k miles isn't that bad, considering I do all my maintenance myself. I wonder what the MTF would have run me to have the dealer change it?? That would be even more painful to pay.

The first time I changed the MTF in my wife's Civic EX was at 97K miles. The Honda MTF shears BIG TIME within 30K miles. Since my wife does all her driving on the highway, I didn't bother changing it every 30K miles.

But I have to admit, with new MTF....it was way smoother.

Last time I was shopping at my Honda dealer was a year and a half ago, and back then they wanted about $4 for MTF and $5 for ATF. LT4 Vette's prices sound right.

When you buy parts at a Honda dealer be sure to ask for a discount. Many will give you a 10 to 20% discount off their list price, all you have to do is ask.

That's not bad at all. Last time I checked, Mopar Manual Transaxle Lube, Chrysler spec MS-9417, commonly costs $10/qt & *up*.

I refilled my MTx once using the Mopar fluid. I recently refilled it with Molakule's Specialty Formulations Synchroglide. Costs no more, better fluid, & works great in the Neon MTx!

I love these higher dealership prices. They make it that much easier to justify a premium lubricant like Specialty Formulations.

I put Amsoil MTF in my 2003 Civic. Shifts great.

ditch the honda-brand mtf. for the same money you can get a 60k-100k fill with a syn.

i use amsoil mtf in an acura 6spd (that calls for honda mtf)...after ~10k shift characteristics have changed not a bit, mileage is up very slightly, and i expect to leave it in for ~100k (based on my own observations re: the longevity of other amsoil gear lubes).

By far and away most of my MTF sold goes into Hondas and I've had zero complaints and lots of smiles.

I just put amsoil 5w30 synchromesh MTF into my 94 civic, shifts are smoother and crisper than the redline MTL that was in there for about 12k. Granted, the redline mtl was loads better than what was in there before, but the amsoil bests the redline in my case. Plus the amsoil is $6.99/qt for me.

i've heard the specialty formulations shifts better than the amsoil in some cases.
