Citgo brand oil

I've noticed some talk here in regards to the Citgo brand oil, I've seen this oil "Citgo Superguard" at the various dollar stores in my area. Do you think this is old stock oil that these stores get, or do you think they get enough of it to keep it fresh? I've wanted to try it on my older cars, all the stuff I saw said "SL" so I don't think it could be that old.

How long had it been since the switch from SJ to SL?, that might give a worst case scenerio as to how old some SL oil might be.

I got 17 qts Citgo Superguard SL at a Dollar Store last spring. Never saw it there again. I doubt you will find any SM at the Dollar Store for a long time.

How much is it? I paid 50 cents a quart and am using it for the Auto Rx treatment and rinse.

I don't think this is necessarily old stock, and may actually be regularly supplied stock to such stores (the Dollar Tree store down the street from me regularly carries it). In fine print at the bottom of the back Citgo label is a date code for the label revision. I suspect it will likely show a date within the last two or three years, well within the 5 year motor oil shelf life suggested by Shell and other refiners. I've seen old "SJ" oils still being sold at K-Mart, so it's possible that this Citgo is actually NEWER than stock (whatever the brand) at some other chains. And the BITOG used oil analysis for Supergard suggest this brand, rather than being somehow inferior, is equivalent to many other name brand conventional oils. I suspect Citgo's price mainly reflects both a price point strategy as well as the lack of a high-cost marketing campaign, such as with Pennzoil, Castrol, etc.

I don't think this is old stock because they sell a ton of this stuff at Fleet Farm stores up here. They also use it as bulk oil for their oil changes. I've heard that it is pretty good oil for the price.

There are some used oil analysis and VOA's of Citgo oils, and Mystic (a Citgo product) oils, if you want a look at their additive packages.
