Funny, when I first started to drive in the mid 70's my dad taught me to maintain my car (junker though it may be.) He always insisted on Quaker State Oil and Fram Oil filters. Well after a couple of years working in the automotive world, I knew for a fact that dad was wrong. Both Quaker State Oil and Fram filters were has-beens. Castrol GTX and WIX filters were where it was at. Then in the pursuit of better, I moved up to Mobil 1 oil and Wix filters. Next step in the parade was Amsoil oil and Amsoil filters. (Always striving for the perceived best). And I always changing the oil every 3000 miles no matter how much it cost. Now at this stage of life, I actually have learned to pay attention to where I am spending my money and am looking for real value... I bought 5 quarts of Formula Shell and a filter at Pep Boys for $9.99. Coupled this with my wifes new HHR with the GM OLM. Got great resuts on a used oil analysis at 7500 miles! For almost nothing! SOPUS seems to be making some great products! What else does SOPUS make? Hmmm. Quaker State. Got some Quaker State Ultimate Durability for free on a FAR and some 2 for 1 Fram Ultra (that look like awesome filters) at Pep Boys. I think this is an awesome value. Great oil with freat filters. Quaker State and Fram.. I'm going 10K on this combo. What??? Wait a second! What happened? I am back where my dad started! Fram ans Quaker State! LOL! Thanks Dad for your wisdom! "Miss ya".

I believe Fram Ultras are the same thing as Fram Xtended Guard? If so they are great filters, but a little costly.
Cool that you got them on sale.
SOPUS also makes Pennzoil and Rotella oils. Both amazing oils, as well.

Yeah man...I never went farther than Mobil 1, used to do 3-4K intervals. Now I roll with 5K or OLM and whatever is FAR or deeply discounted. I keep a 4-5 change stock for each vehicle bought on sale/FAR so I have confidence that I got stuff as cheap as I can get it(still building up for the truck) and don't worry about it.

Now looking at a blender who buys mobil singapore base stocks, uses POA in the PDS, and Lubrizol...
It's $50-60 per OCI, and even at 1 yer, that's worth it.

When I started driving it was oil change & grease every 1,000 miles. No filters to change unless you had an after market add on or one of the few that had one as an option.
Oil changes to many in here is a hobby.
I have pretty much settled on 10k oci's with Mobil 1. I am learning not to worry (obsess) about oil anymore.
I have over 100 cases, yes cases of Amsoil in my Stash(includes PI improver, Coolant Boost, Brake Fluid, 2000 Racing Grease, Ea Oil&Air filters, etc everything they make), But Whats in My Beloved SilverStone Metallic 2001 Jeep Cherokees 4.0? 6 quarts QuakerState 10w-40 and a Fram PH8(Oversized). True Story.

It may be that Amsoil or Royal Purple or Red Line is the absolute best as far as protecting your engine. I really don't doubt it. What made me move away from those higher priced oils was the realization that no matter what I used, as long as it was a reasonable quality product, I didn't let my oil level go low, and changed the oil out before it was used up, my engine was very likely to outlast the rest of my car. Cars rust, suspensions wear out, transmissions eventually go, etc, plastic trim pieces become brittle and fall apart, and rattles develop all over the place. I guess I just saw no good use in hauling a used up beat car to the junk yard with a still great motor in it.

I put good old 10w30 in a 99 tracer merc. 195000 mi. just use Pennzoil standard oil and guess what,,yep a fram filter. U know that little car never has to add oil between oil changes and thats when I think about it. You got me why it does not use oil when it should be.

I agree with what you're saying 100%. It's just that for me Amsoil OE is cheaper than any off the shelf synthetic and within 50 cents of any off the shelf conventional, also only a 10 min drive to pick up. I do 5k oci's except for the Trailblazer equipped with an olm.

I have sort of regressed, still use Amsoil in one car but for the most part Shell Full Synthetic from BJs and NAPA Gold Filters.
When I first started changing my own oil in the last 70s I was special ordering from the local parts store Castrol 10W50 yes 10W50 and using it in a VW Rabbit in CT no less. the 10W50 did get a little thick in the winter though.

Growing up my dad was heavily into antique cars. When we pulled apart an engine with sludge in it he always said the previous owner must have used Quaker State. All of dad's friends would say the same thing.
Naturally I have avoided QS, until I joined BITOG and started educating myself. This weekend I used QS for the first time in one of my own vehicles. The Quaker State Ultimate Durability deal was too good to pass up.
I hope dad forgives me.....
