i have nothing against cigars. iam 62 started smoking pipe 2 years ago. the reason i like a pipe is that its cheep and in one week i smoke equal to 4-5 cigarettes. with pipes you smoke a LOT less tobacco, but enjoy it more. i smoke captain black, very mild.

You don't realize what a stinky, dirty habit smoking is unless you're a non smoker who walks into a home in which a smoker lives.

When I visit my parents (who both smoke, and dad smokes cigars) I'm disgusted at both the smell and the brown stains that cover the walls.

When I return home, even if I've only been in their house for a few minutes, I strip my clothing off in the garage (door closed of course) and the clothing immediately goes into the washer. I always take a shower as soon as I arrive home; the stench permeates both my skin and hair.

Even when my smoker parents visit our home (and don’t smoke while they’re here) we can still smell the stench of stale smoke where they’ve been sitting. The couches get a dose of “What Odor?” once they’ve left.

I won't get into the health issues it's caused both of them or the "smokers voice" that my mother has from decades of huffing and puffing.

Why anyone would think that is “cool” is beyond me.

Not sure what occasional cigar smoking has to do with life long cigarette habits (please don't use the "gateway drug" argument).

I've been smoking cigars on a regular, infrequent basis (3-6x per year) since I was 18 (34 now). It's a fun and enjoyable hobby. Sometimes it's nice to sit out on the deck with a cigar and a magazine and enjoy the weather and some quiet time. It's nice to get together with the boys, have a smoke, carry on a little bit. Pretend for a couple hours that we're not all married, professionals, and fathers

For the OP, I would recommend going to a proper smoke shop with a walk in humidor. Pick a medium size, medium length cigar in a claro/colorado/natural shade (ie light) wrap. Honestly any of the good brands carried by a good shop will be fine. I've always been partial to Montecristo, Partagas, and the Hoyo de Monterrey Excalibur.

Shrooms, do yourself a favor and stay away from tobacco in any form. Cigars can lead to cigarettes. I'm 59 years old, and just quit smoking after 45 years. I've been far luckier than most, with no health problems that I know of. (Knock on wood.) Still, it's a very tough habit to quit. Don't go down that road for anything.

Disregard the safety nazis. If you want to try cigars, do it. You're old enough to make up your own mind, and no doubt you've heard the no-smoking thing for the last 30-40 yrs.

Find a smoke shop in your area and discuss your requirements with the shop owner or counter guy. It would be a good place to get a fresh and humidified cigar to start with. Don't go $35 cigars right away, start with some $5-10 ones. Or, go for an Ashton, as they are mild-ish and well behaved.

Don't get in a hurry, and enjoy your time with it.

Suit yourself. If you want to smell bad, have really bad breath and permanently stained teeth, a greatly diminshed sense of taste, less money in your pocket, family and friends complaining and giving you a hard time about the smell of your habits and a really good chance of contracting oral and/or throat cancer, then knock yourself out. Smoking anything, tobacco or otherwise and using spit tobacco are absolutely and without a doubt some of the stupidest and most offensive things you can do.

I hardly think smoking a few cigars a year is going to cause all of that.

I doubt if I smoke more than 10-12 a year.

I was wondering the same thing. I do exactly the same thing; I smoke maybe 4 or 5 cigars a year when I hang out with old friends, celebrate a new baby, or an upcoming wedding. I'm far from an aficionado but one of life's great pleasures is smoking a cigar, sipping on cognac or bourbon, and spending time with old army buddies.

There's a big difference between smoking a cigar or pipe a few times a year and somebody chain-smoking cigarettes. Just like there's a difference between enjoying an occasional beer and being a slobbering drunk.

I take it you never drink an occasional beer, go to the beach, eat a steak, eat seafood, change the oil on your car w/out gloves, drive with the windows down the summer, drink from the hose, walk barefoot in the grass, live in an old house, shoot without safety glasses...?

All of the above are as dangerous, or more dangerous than smoking the occasional cigar. I could go on with a similar tirade about any of those things.

There have been studies that show very light smoking has benefits of staving off Alzheimers - reports that are not widely distributed in America.

Isn't that just about par for the course...lol

I wonder if that includes second hand smoke...lol...can you imagine if someone came out and said that a little second hand smoke is beneficial and can stave off Alzheimers...the smoke Nazis will be apoplectic.

My goodness. I can understand if I'm asking suggestions on CIGARETTES. Do you drink? How often? If you drink let's say 3-4 beers a week, then I can call you an alcoholic. But if you drink 10-20 beers a YEAR....well, you get my point.

Like anything else, too much is not good. FOOD kills and it's addictive you know. It's all about moderation.

shrooms -- cubans ARE overrated, as one poster states.good quality dominican, honduran, and nicaraguan are very good choices.these countries have used smuggled cuban seed 30 or 40 years back -- hence the high quality of their cigars for the last 15+ years.try a 6-7" mild to medium body, $5-7 cigar from a cigar shop with a walk in humidor. ask the store employee/owner for advice.
www.cigar.com is an excellent site and has many choices, and is reasonably priced. when you know what you like, you can buy bundles of 20 for a very good price.
re: lighting cigars -- only wooden matches should be used.
to the preacher types telling you what is not good for you -- the OP asked for opinions on types of cigars, not health advice.a couple stated that cigar smoking can/will lead to cigarette smoking.statements like this lack logic and fact, and only reveal ignorance.comparing nicotine addicted cigarette smokers to cigar smokers is ludicrous.cigar smokers do not inhale, and cigars do not have all the chemicals in them to make them burn. put a lit cigar and cigarette in an ashtray, and observe.so -- get off of your collective soapboxes, as it's not your business if one wants to smoke cigars, unless it's in your home.you guys must think that you're politicians.
when i have a cigar, it's always outside, or in the garage.a few friends have built a smoking room in their basements, and evacuate the smoke by exhaust fan.food for thought, if you wish to smoke indoors.
OP -- if you like cigars, you can buy a humidor for a reasonable price.whatever you decide, do NOT let preachy types tell you what to do.we all get enough of that from our rules-makers.
have a good night, all -- even the preachers. i have to go outside with a honduran churchill, and a brandy.

The occasional cigar/pipe/drink isn't going to hurt anyone.

Good draw on a cigar/pipe, a brandy on the table. Life is good.

Here, here..... I have former classmates that spent almost 200 bucks a weekend in alcohol.... i just sit back have a one drink and one cigar and ponder who is better off at the moment.... To the OP give Gurkha cigars a try... the lighter ones to start out with

I used to smoke cigars.

The problem is, a decent one is expensive, and there are more lasting things to do with cash. So about two years ago I quit flat-out. I have not had a cigar since. Nicotine is addictive, but money is more so. The smell of a good cigar leaf is sweet; the feel of money better.

I only dig one out of my humi on special occasions, when i Finally have a day off from school and work all in one. That only averages about 5-6 times a year..

Daughter brought me back a cuban cigar from Dubai. She's in the Navy, so travels around those parts.

I had it in the humidor for about a week to even it out some. It was a 5x45 robusto Cohiba. It burned evenly and was well behaved, but didn't have a lot of flavor. I can't imagine it was cheap, and I'm sure I smoke better cigars regularly for $10.

I bought a box of cuban Punch cigars while I was in Saudi. They were good, but not the nirvana one believes they will be having.
