Never smoked in my life. When I say never, I mean NEVER. But I've come to a point where I want to try cigars. As a cigar virgin, what should I look for? What do you suggest? I'm guessing, something very mild?

If you have lived this long, then do yourself a favor and run to the exit before you enter! Tobacco has a way of sneaking up on you. You can get hooked on it before you even suspect it happened. Nothing good what ever will come from it. I'm still a somewhat "healthy" person, pushing late sixty something who has risked my health everyday for the past 50 years of smoking. You didn't ask for advise on this subject, but I feel a duty to warn you that smoking anything is inviting a monkey on your back that you won't welcome. Ask me sometime about the heavy drug users who have told me that they have kicked all drugs over time, but smoking hasn't been one. I'm sorry for being preachy...I only wish I had listened.

Smoking cigars is like drinking wine there are as many choices and preferences. The only cigar smoking I have done is sampling cigars at work. The most impressive was a Cuban cigar . Some taste better than others that is all I know. I would guess trying cigars out would be the fun of cigars.

Don't.

lol. I smoke socially, generally one to two cigars or cigarillos on the weekends....or less, like I said, depends if I'm "out and about"....I'm not one to "light up" at work, just for the [censored] of it.

Anyways, if you can find one, a Don Diego Cigar would be a good first time to try.

Best to light the cigar with a butane lighter, vs, a classic "BIC".....otherwise you'll get a strange taste of the lighter fluid as it's pulled through the cigar....

I've found most traditional "cigars" to be very bland. But as mentioned, the Don Diego I had was about the best. Never had a Cuban though

Start with something "mild" like a cigarillo, be it a White Owl, Swisher Sweet, or a Black and Mild.

And remember, you aren't inhaling the smoke...lol, you'll kill yourself :P especially if you've never smoked.....you just sort of "taste" it in your mouth then expel it

And they aren't meant to be "chain smoked" lol...the longer they burn, the hotter they get, or so it seems anyways

Smoking a premium hand made cigar a few times a week is totally different than smoking a pack of cigarettes every day, its not exactly healthy but it sure is healthier.

I would not recomend for someone in there 20"s to take it up but I didnt start smoking cigars on a regular basis till I was 50 and believe me , something else is going to kill me first.

I like Don thomas, Baccarat, and a house brand here called Heavenly Honduran. I would suggest going to a real cigar store with a walk in humidor and talk to someone working there for suggestions.

I like Churchill Cigars, Chequers are my favorite. Nothing better than a Chequers with a fine glass of scotch, maybe like a Glenmorangie 18, or a Glenmorangie nectar d'or.

Great way to end a day on the water at the yacht club or sitting on the back of the boat.

BTW cigars should only be light with wooden match's so as not to spoil the flavor. Lighters should never be used. The coolest way to light one which I have done once is off a hot gun barrel!

Cigars are not like cigarettes don't chain smoke them and don't inhale. My limit is about 2 in a row.

As was stated, the flavors of cigars vary widely. I started a few years ago. I only smoke on average one a month, and often go months between cigars. It's a social thing with the right people in the right place. My tastes have evolved. Also there's no such thing as a beginner's cigar. It's all what you end up liking.

That said, I'd recommend an Oliva G as your first cigar. Nice flavors, but not strong. The Belicoso is a good size.

Romeo Y Julieta is my personal favorite, followed by Macanudos.

If you're looking for something commonly available & cheap to try, the OTC (over the counter) Backwoods cigars are great.

If you are looking for an Aromatic (yes they do make them) then John T Crowd Pleasers are pretty good as well, but true cigar afficionados woundn't touch something like this. Come on now, cigar and smells good?

This man speaks the truth, don't even bother, it could be a gateway into cigarettes and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. I have cut back significantly with the child being born and hoping to stop all together. I make it as annoying as possible to have one, leaving them in my car, not smoking in my car, have to go outside for one ie, I want to be lazy and the last thing I want to do is go outside and "fetch" one. So i 9 times out of 10 leave em out there.

The few times I have had Cigars was visiting J&R's and trying out various brands. I liked Chequer's and occassionally Black & Milds for a small hint of flavor during a hangout. But be sure to limit yourself, not many people like the smell of Cigars much like Cigarettes. You could also try buying a Hookah and smoke some Arabian/mixed tobacco =)

Just look around in a cigar shop and pick something that seems interesting to you.

Once in a while I buy a cigar just for the [censored] of it. My favorite one was a Makers Mark bourbon flavored cigar. The place I bought it from doesn't have them anymore though. I'd go with something cheaper since you've never smoked before, that way you don't have a lot of money in it if you hate it (probably for the better). Keep in mind that the time between my once in a while cigars is filled with regular use of smokeless tobacco...nicotine is very addictive. Best to not even touch it just in case you like it too much.

No No No!!

Cubans are TOTALLY overrated!

For what your going to pay for a Cuban, you can get a 10X better cigar from The Dominican Republic or Nicaragua.

Plus, the only Cubans you can get in the states are going to be either:

A) Old as [censored] and imported before the embargo. No telling how they were kept, aged, nor the quality of the tobacco.

or

B) It is illegally imported into the US and there is NO telling on the quality of the tobacco, how it was imported (kept at 70% humidity, kept out of high heat, unclean moisture, ect. . ., or if it was aged/kept/ect well. . . .

FOR THE OP:

For a new cigar smoker, I would recommend something simple, smooth, and easy to smoke.

For a fine cigar, at a fair price, and one that is all of the above, check out Rocky Patel. Their "Ocean Club" line is very very nice!

Welcome to the wonderful world of CIGARS!!!!

I don't smoke but I do love to listen to the "Cigar Dave" radio show. He has a way of describing a flaming stick that makes you want to give it a try.

Wow, thanks for the advice people. Very much appreciated as with the warning.

Mouth cancer? I'd guess you'd have to be smoking for years AND we have a much better chance in getting skin cancer.

Mouth cancer? I'm pretty sure something else will kill me first.

I remember I sold a house for a guy who was 50, a health nut, only eat what he was supposed to, never smoked, drank, etc. Had his own personal trainer, dietician, went to the doctors all the time for check ups. He also ran marathons and was in about as good shape as you can get.

He dropped dead at 51 of a heart attack.

Just goes to show you...you don't know whats going to get you.

If you don't smoke now, it is best not to start. I can give you a lot of reasons: it's expensive, it stinks to high heaven, it is super addictive, it is harder to quit tobacco than it is to quit heroin and cocaine, it is becoming less and less socially acceptable, and the very most important reason is tobacco smoking and smokeless tobacco both cause cancer. Oral cancer is one of the deadliest forms of cancer there is and lung cancer or emphysema is a terrible way to die.

Cigars may taste good and look cool but they can lead to other forms of tobacco use and tobacco is a hard monkey to get off your back. I should know, I smoked 1 to 2 packs of cigarettes a day for over 22 years. I quit smoking almost 8 years ago. Sure I could have a heart attack tomorrow or get hit by a bus next week, but dying from cancer is terrible. Seven years ago last month my wife died of colorectal cancer. She was only 38 years old. Our daughter was only 11 when her mom died. My wife had started smoking socially at 14 and was a heavy 2 pack a day smoker when she was diagnosed with terminal stage 4 colon cancer. It wasn't lung cancer but I know her tobacco habit either directly caused or was a major reason for the cancer that killed her. It was ugly too..in the end it had spread to her liver, lungs, all of her reproductive organs and her brain. The doctors took out a foot and a half of her large intestine, did a complete hysterectomy and gave her a colostomy all in an effort not to save her life but to prolong it. There is nothing that can be done for metatstatic colon cancer. It is a terrible thing to watch someone you love suffer through brutal chemo and radiation treatments, throw up blood and green bile and watch them die slowly with no hope of recovery, cure or remission. I doubt you would want to put your family through any of that.

My girlfriend's dad smoked cigars every day of his adult life until a few years ago. He died last year of liver cancer. Actually it wasn't the cancer that killed him, he died from complications from surgery when they removed 80% of his liver trying to save his life. He also had prostate cancer. He was only in his mid-70's.

In short, if you don't smoke now, do not start. It will kill you. Period.

OK, anti-smoking rant is over.
