Just curious if anyone on here knows what this spec means. The OM for my Caravan says to use API-certified engine oil that meets Chrysler MS6395 and of 5w20 viscosity. I have noticed that some brands specifically state on the bottle that they meet it and others don't. I'm assuming that there are probably several oils that meet the spec and just don't list it. I'm long out of warranty so it isn't important for those purposes but it just strikes my curiosity. I can't imagine the decades old design 3.3 liter requiring some high tech oil spec. Does anyone know what the spec means or if it even matters?

my guess would be that it is a range set for additives that are in the oil. my guess would be Chyslers fine line of necessary protection as well as emissions. possibly a range for oil additives, and a baseline minimum for basestock.

If you are looking at XOM and Castrol products both are two off the top of my head that do not meet the spec. It takes 3 years of performance testing if I remember correctly. I do not know how XOM dropped the ball on that one being the former factory fill for Chrysler.

Castrol GTX doesn't list MS6395 on the bottle but their website does list the 5w20 5w30 and 10w30 as meeting it. Not sure which is more accurate though.

Thanks for informing me on that it looks like Castrol GTX is approved now at least since June. With your 2005 Caravan it does not really matter on which brand you used. It really would not matter what brand you would use if bought a new Chrysler today and if it spec'd MS6395 and the owner used a Mobil product.

As far as the spec itself it gets revised every once in awhile but I am not sure what exactly it involves.

i looked through my stash of oils that i have that list ms-6395 are mobil 1, qsgb, and vwb. Pennzoil, shell, castrol gtx, halvoline, and mobil 5000 do not list it. these are all sm rated oils except for the halvoline so maybe things have changed. castrol does list ms 6395 on their site, and i find it hard to believe that sopus would only let one of their oils meet the spec.

but maybe thats just the way things are.
