Unaware of "sludge" problems in this model, I bought a '99 Concord with 77K miles. Oil was pretty black when I got it. Have 1K miles on new oil & filter. Has used about 1 pint but is still only slightly discolored. Engine is quiet and runs well with lots of power. Have been advised to do 1K OCI for several changes and use high detergent oil, perhaps even Shell Rotella for Diesel. Haven't pulled valve cover but unable to see sludge build up on parts visible. What advice to this "first poster"?

To a very additive Q&A board. You should have posted this in the car oil scetion, not in the Diesel oil section but hey its here now. I too would do a couple of short OCI's of 2000 miles or so. SSDUDE dident mean to run diesel fuel in the engine but diesel rated oil. Most Diesel spec oils have a high additive package that cleans as it lubes. I think Shell Rottela T comes in a 5W40 that may fit well in a short OCI or two. I would recommend Amsoil SL2000 0W30 in a sludge prone engine. Others will post Pro's and Con's of other oils too. Welcome Oilyhands,
Sounds like your car is running well and its great that your being proactive with your maintainance. If you are interested in using a high detergent oil rated for diesel and gas can i suggest the XD-3 products from Esso. The 0w-30 is a full synthetic and you should be able to find this in your area. Im presently using this oil in my 98 GMC Sierra 4x4 with 5.7L.
Here is the link if your interested;

I'd pull a valve cover off for inspection. Time wasted for VC inspection versus multiple 1k OCIs is your choice to make.

Definitely use a diesel oil, preferably synthetic.
If the engine is running well, just start a 3k/3mo OCI with the diesel oil. There is no risk of damage to the engine seals with heavy duty engine oil.
I'd stick with the 0w30, 0w40, 5w40 HDEO's depending on weather condition.

If there is room, you could also use a larger filter for slightly more oil capacity/cooling/filtering/......

I'd also consider having the timing chain/components replaced.

Since you will be doing short oil changes, it might be more cost effective to use dino diesel. When your engine is clean, you might want to switch to synthetic oil for longer oil change intervals.

Diesel engine oil does not contain enough detergents to clean a dirty engine. Auto-Rx does a superb job of that. Some (all?) diesel engine oils can damage post 1994 catalytic converters due to the high sulfated ash content.

The vast majority of diesel oils carry an API SL gasoline engine specification. To my thick, wooden skull, that means they are safe for catalytic converter equipped gasoline engines.

I thought the sulfated ash levels were related to spark plug fouling concerns(?). That's what it used to be...

GC (if you can find it) is a fine cleaning choice too.
I believe it cleaned out my Saturn going from 1qt/1000 to 1 pint/4000.

Go get some XD3 and it will definitely clean it out.

Replace your PCV valve ASAP.
