The 2 of the 3 malls by me are still thriving. I had a pretzel stand in one of the malls made decent money sold it for a nice profit before covid hit.

My mall memories would be of The Village near Gary and the Disney-like Oakbrook Shopping Center in nearby Illinoise.

It's a bit disconcerting that people are referencing the early 1980's as "different" (better) times.

The malls were fun for people under about 21. I worked at one in my mid-20s, and it was pretty grim. Lines of stores selling the same overpriced crapola. The worst was Spencer Gifts. Peddlers of worthless garbage to a gullible public.

Still have a few Malls around and the wife and I enjoy just walking around taking in watching people shopping and having a good time, young people, older couples, brings back a lot of good memories, feel sorry for all the scrooges that only remember all their negative experiences.

My Dad used to say that my mom’s car had an autopilot feature to go to Oak Brook.

I'm not a complete curmudgeon. I was an emergency Santa (for a photographer) at the Garden State Plaza in Paramus, NJ.
Not many here can say that!

The malls around here are pretty much gone.
When malls were bustling places fully leased and full of people they were fun.
Back in the late eighties, wife and I would get a babysitter for our two then young sons and go Christmas shopping for things for them and then go and have a nice dinner at a good local place.
It was a different world then and I can't say that things are better now.

I would not say things are better nor worst just different. I find it much easier driving into a mall/plaza now vs then. Less traffic now and they run that single item you order to your vehicle instead of those nutty lines looking for items not in stock….
