Syn Oil of course.

Better cold weather starts, better heat resistance, usually better additive package to keep engines clean.

There's no magic oil. In extremes.. synth oils endure or perform better. But going down the road ..not usually. They may last longer in service without issues.

Many synths aren't marketed as extended drain oils and have unremarkable additive packages. Others will be targeted toward extended drains (which may be time weighted instead of mileage weighted) and they tend to have additive levels to meet those goals.

I agree with what you are saying Gary. From a consumer standpoint, how do you know which is designed towards shorter run proficiency vs. extended drain proficiency? All we see is marketing spins on TV. Kind of like the government.

Most of the true extended drain oils promote it. Amsoil is all about it. I wish I could say more, but that's about it. Even the XL line up is beyond what most consumers are going to dare and attempt.

M1 promotes their EP line up. I imagine it's targeted toward those with OEM recommendations that are spec'd with conventional oils. The rest are carrying the spec's of the various vehicles that are recommended with (by our standards) extended drains by their manufacturer (BMWLL/MB229.x/VWwhatever).

Pennzoil doesn't appear to promote extended drains ..and appears to have a whole line of Euro spec oils that are distinctive from their "normal" Platinum line up.

In short (never with me), if you look at what the oil is spec'd for, you can get an idea of its endurance. Most of our popular (read cheaper) synths that aren't HDEOs, aren't designed for much beyond the OEM spec's for your average North American passenger car.
